{"id":28,"date":"2003-10-23T13:05:33","date_gmt":"2003-10-23T17:05:33","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2012-03-02T13:45:57","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T18:45:57","slug":"october-23-international-environmental-moot-court-competition-at-stetson-law-to-debate-sustainable-use-of-ocean-fisheries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2003\/10\/23\/october-23-international-environmental-moot-court-competition-at-stetson-law-to-debate-sustainable-use-of-ocean-fisheries\/","title":{"rendered":"October 23- International Environmental Moot Court Competition at Stetson Law To Debate Sustainable Use of Ocean Fisheries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Contact Davina Gould<br \/>\nAsst Director of Communications<br \/>\n(727) 562-7346<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gulfport, Fla.<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0 Law students from around the world will converge on Stetson University College of Law, Oct. 31-Nov. 1 for the Eighth Annual International Environmental Moot Court Competition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This competition will draw some of the world&#8217;s best student advocates who have a particular focus on environmental issues,&#8221; said Royal Gardner, associate dean of Stetson University College of Law. &#8220;Stetson is proud to sponsor the only moot court competition that addresses international environmental issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s problem concerns issues associated with large-scale driftnet fishing on the high seas and whether obligations flowing from treaties and international customs apply to a newly independent state. Twenty-eight teams from Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, India, New Zealand and 12 different U.S. states are expected to compete.<\/p>\n<p>Three renowned attorneys have been selected as final round judges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lakshman Guruswamy, an author of a leading international environmental law course book and Colorado University law professor<\/li>\n<li>Anne Rowley, an attorney specializing in international matters with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/li>\n<li>William Thomas, a Washington D.C. attorney who is former chair of the ABA&#8217;s International Environmental Law Committee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students from Queensland University of Technology in Australia won last year&#8217;s competition.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Dean Gardner and Interim Dean Darby Dickerson created this competition in 1996 to increase awareness about international environmental challenges. In its inaugural year, 12 teams competed.
