{"id":28413,"date":"2019-09-20T11:34:01","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T15:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=28413"},"modified":"2019-09-20T11:35:18","modified_gmt":"2019-09-20T15:35:18","slug":"28413","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2019\/09\/20\/28413\/","title":{"rendered":"Stetson professors take advocacy training to the Caribbean"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stetson Advocacy is everywhere, and most recently it was the\nVirgin Islands! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of July, Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/flowers-roberta-k\/\">Roberta Flowers<\/a> and Julia Metts traveled to the Caribbean for hands on Stetson advocacy lectures, demonstrations, and interactive presentations for members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vibar.org\/\">Virgin Islands Bar Association<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The multi-day training session was actually several years in\nthe making thanks to hurricane delays and other hiccups, but it was well worth\nthe wait, said VIBA President Chivonne Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStetson is a friend of the Virgin Islands Bar Association,\nand we have fostered a great relationship,\u201d she said. \u201cThey truly made the\neffort to learn about the law in the VI and assist in helping our practitioners\nmanage the ever-changing body of law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Customized training was key<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas wanted to bring real trial training to the members of\nher organization.&nbsp; She and her board\nspent countless hours on conference calls with the team at Stetson to fine tune\nthe training and develop a program that met the unique needs of the VIBA.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur primary goals were to provide our practitioners with\nfeedback in real time and to grow the advocacy skills for attorneys of all\nexperience levels, especially our young lawyers,\u201d she said. \u201cGiven the shortage\nof practitioners, our young attorneys are often thrown into the courtroom\nsooner than their stateside counterparts, and we wanted to give them tools that\nthey could utilize to strengthen their advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metts explained that Stetson Law appreciates every\nopportunity to train advocates in every place where justice matters and skills\nare needed. The upshot of all the hard work and planning meant attorneys with\nno experience joined attorneys with 40+ years\u2019 experience to \u201clearn by doing\u201d\nand participate in trial skills-based training.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe results were phenomenal!\u201d<\/p><cite>Prof. Julia Metts<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas said nearly 60 people attended the seminar, and they are\nlooking forward to further training opportunities with Stetson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stetson Advocacy is everywhere, and most recently it was the Virgin Islands!
