Morgan<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center for Excellence in Elder Law at Stetson University College of Law has adopted WINGS, a national guardianship program incubated by Florida\u2019s courts and now transitioning to the state\u2019s acknowledged experts and national leaders in this area of specialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WINGS, or Working Interdisciplinary\nNetwork of Guardianship Stakeholders, began with a grant awarded to Florida\u2019s\nOffice of the State Courts Administrator from the American Bar Association\u2019s\nCommission on Law and Aging. The transfer and evolution from startup to mature\nprogram allows the continuation of WINGS following the successful completion of\nthe grant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stetson University College of Law, a stakeholder in WINGS from its inception in 2017, will coordinate meetings of WINGS, host its website, and manage the work of the program through the Center for Excellence in Elder Law and its faculty, including Professors Rebecca Morgan and Roberta Flowers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/flowers_headshot_2013-900x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Roberta Flowers co-directs Stetson's elder law center.\" class=\"wp-image-20690\" width=\"174\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/flowers_headshot_2013-900x1024.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/flowers_headshot_2013-439x500.jpg 439w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/flowers_headshot_2013-768x874.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><figcaption>Professor Roberta Flowers <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morgan and Flowers created a <a href=\"https:\/\/flwings.flcourts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/online-guardianship-courses.pdf\">video series<\/a> used to train and educate attorneys nationwide on the ethical dilemmas faced by elder law attorneys. They were awarded the Florida Supreme Court Professionalism Award for their video productions. In addition, they designed the nation&#8217;s first elder-friendly courtroom. Morgan and Flowers also developed, through WINGS, four e-learning modules to increase judges\u2019 and attorneys\u2019 professional competence and skills related to guardianship and less restrictive options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are 4.3 million Floridians aged 65\nor older. A quarter of the state\u2019s population is projected to be aged 65 or\nolder by 2030. Increasingly, Floridians seek help from the State Courts System\nwhen they or loved ones need their interests protected. Guardianship cases for\nadults have increased steadily, with more than 7,300 cases to establish\nguardianship filed in the 2017-18 fiscal year, a 13 percent increase from five\nyears previous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its\nstartup phase directed by the courts, WINGS members recommended strategies for\nboosting the number of physicians serving on examining committees, created an\ninformational guide and toolkit for decision-making options, and developed a\ntool to help law enforcement officers and first responders identify abuse,\nneglect, or exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WINGS stakeholders include representatives\nfrom Florida courts, clerks of court, state executive agencies, private\norganizations, and advocacy groups as well as family guardians and self-advocates.\nMore information about WINGS, the guardianship e-learning modules, and other\nguardianship resources may be found on the Florida WINGS website, <a href=\"https:\/\/flwings.flcourts.org\/\">flwings.flcourts.org<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Excellence in Elder Law at Stetson University College of Law has adopted WINGS, a national guardianship program incubated by Florida\u2019s courts and now transitioning to the state\u2019s acknowledged experts and national leaders in this area of specialization.
