Culverhouse, a successful tax lawyer and\nthe original owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He established the chair with\nthe goal of attracting distinguished professors and judges from diverse areas\nof law to visit Stetson. Professor Carbado joins a prestigious group of\nprevious Culverhouse Chairs that includes E. Allan Farnsworth, Edward D.\nOhlbaum, and Stetson\u2019s own Ellen Podgor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor\nCarbado graduated from Harvard Law School in 1994 and joined the UCLA School of\nLaw faculty in 1997 where he is the Honorable Harry Pregerson Professor of Law.\nHe teaches&nbsp;<em>Constitutional Criminal Procedure<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Constitutional\nLaw<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Critical Race Theory<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Criminal Adjudication<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDevon\nCarbado is an esteemed professor and distinguished author, and we are thrilled\nto welcome him as Stetson\u2019s newest Culverhouse Chair,\u201d said Stetson University\nCollege of Law Dean Mich\u00e8le Alexandre. \u201cHis presence on campus this year will\noffer enriching experiences for our students, faculty and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cDevon Carbado is an esteemed professor and distinguished author, and we are thrilled to welcome him as Stetson\u2019s newest Culverhouse Chair,\u201d said Stetson University College of Law Dean Mich\u00e8le Alexandre. \u201cHis presence on campus this year will offer enriching experiences for our students, faculty and staff.\u201d<\/p><cite>Dean Mich\u00e8le Alexandre<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbado has\nwon numerous teaching awards, including being elected Professor of the Year by\nthe UCLA School of Law classes of 2000 and 2006. He was an inaugural recipient\nof the Fletcher Foundation Fellowship, which is awarded to scholars whose work\nfurthers the goals of&nbsp;<em>Brown v. Board of Education<\/em>. In 2018, he was\nnamed an inaugural recipient of the Atlantic Philanthropies Fellowship for\nRacial Equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbado\nhas devoted much of his career to the examination of race, both in his\nteachings and works. He writes in the areas of employment discrimination,\ncriminal procedure, implicit bias, constitutional law, and critical race\ntheory. He is the author of&nbsp;<em>Acting White? Rethinking Race in\n\u201cPost-Racial\u201d America&nbsp;<\/em>(Oxford University Press) (with Mitu Gulati) and\nthe editor of several volumes, including&nbsp;<em>Race<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Law Stories<\/em>&nbsp;(Foundation\nPress) (with Rachel Moran), among others.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carbado on campus this November and in spring<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a\ncampus visit Nov. 11-17, 2019, Carbado will meet with Stetson\u2019s Diversity\nCommittee on current and ongoing equality models; deliver an academic\npresentation to faculty; hold class sessions with both the full-time and\npart-time students; and deliver a presentation to students and the law school\ncommunity. In spring 2020, he will teach a two-credit course called, \u201cCritical\nRace Judgments: Critical Race Theory and Supreme Court Decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This marks\nthe second time Carbado will visit Stetson. He previously served as a Nicols\nLecturer for the College of Law and spoke on racial justice. The Nichols\nFoundation Prominent Speakers Series was established at Stetson in 1995 in\nhonor of Perry Nichols, a successful national trial lawyer and past president\nof both the American Trial Lawyers Association and the International Trial\nLawyers Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am excited\nto return to Stetson.
