On Oct. 21, 2019, the Office of Career and\nProfessional Development hosted a panel to help students with summer associate\nor law clerk positions by shining a light on what they can expect and how to\nmake the most of their time in the law firm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A panel of local attorneys and members of the American\nBar Association (ABA) shared their top tips in a special ABA 30 in 30 session\nwith students. Panel members included Logan\nMurphy<\/a>,  shareholder with Hill Ward Henderson\nin Tampa; Katie\nMcCray<\/a>, senior counsel at Wilson Turner Kosmo LLP in San Diego; Erica\nBartimmo<\/a>, corporate counsel for Jabil Inc. in Tampa; and Brian Koji<\/a>, shareholder\nwith Allen Norton & Blue, P.A. in Tampa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Tips<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. Find\na Mentor:<\/strong> This is easy to say but hard to do because everyone\nis likely very busy. Make yourself visible and valuable. Go into attorneys\u2019\noffices and ask what they are working on and if you can help. Seek out more\nthan one mentor if you can.  <\/li>
  2. Receive\nSoftware Training:<\/strong> If the firm offers training, make sure\nyou sign up. Get to know the IT person or team.<\/li>
  3. Learn\nthe Law:<\/strong> Learn as much as you can. Even in firms that\nspecialize, there are different subtopics. <\/li>
  4. Understand\nResearch Economics:<\/strong> Ask if you should research on Google or\nother free search engine before heading to Lexis Nexis or Westlaw. <\/li>
  5. Accept\nAssignments:<\/strong> Volunteer to do research or extra\nassignments if the opportunity arises. <\/li>
  6. Know\nWho Does What:<\/strong> Remember there are other team members who\nmake up a successful law firm besides the attorneys. Get to know the paralegals\nand administrative staff, too. Sometimes it is better to ask a paralegal a\nquestion before going straight to the attorney.<\/li>
  7. Get\nTime Estimates:<\/strong> Some assignments should only take an hour\nwhile other assignments will take all week. If you feel like you are spending\ntoo much time on a project, let your supervising attorney know.<\/li>
  8. Know\nYour Firm: <\/strong>Research the firm online before you start\nworking there.<\/li>
  9. Look\nthe Part:<\/strong> If you look like a lawyer, you\u2019ll be treated like a\nlawyer.<\/li>
  10. Incorporate\nAssigning Attorney\u2019s Styles:<\/strong> Write how the assigning\nattorney wants you to write rather than how your Research & Writing\nprofessor wanted you to write.<\/li>
  11. Be\nRespectful:<\/strong> Always err on side of being respectful.\nDon\u2019t forget to be respectful to assistants.<\/li>
  12. Solicit\nFeedback:<\/strong> Ask what the attorney thought of your work if\nfeedback is not provided. Feedback is the most valuable part of a clerkship.\nDon\u2019t be defensive when you receive criticism. <\/li>
  13. Learn\nfrom Mistakes:<\/strong> Attorneys expect that you will make\nmistakes. You are evaluated on how you learn from your mistakes.<\/li>
  14. Socialize\nwith Caution:<\/strong> You need to go to firm social events.\nIt\u2019s part of the job and part of your evaluation. Do not overindulge.<\/li>
  15. Report\nAll Time:<\/strong> Write down everything you do.<\/li>
  16. Utilize\na Calendar System:<\/strong> This is very important because often\nmalpractice is a result of missing a deadline.<\/li>
  17. Read\nTime Reports:<\/strong> Make sure clients\u2019 names are spelled\ncorrectly. If you think you spent too much time on a project, talk to the\nassigning attorney about it.<\/li>
  18. Organize\nWork:<\/strong> Learn it and do it in a way that makes sense to you.<\/li>
  19. Do\nYour Best Work:<\/strong> You can use briefs or other assignments you\ncreate as future writing samples as long as you get permission.<\/li>
  20. Proofread\nand Double Check All Written Materials:<\/strong> When you think you are\ndone editing, edit it one more time, have someone else edit it, and then edit\none last time.<\/li>
  21. Keep\na List of Major Projects You Completed:<\/strong> This will help you\nreflect on all you\u2019ve learned over the course of the summer.<\/li>
  22. Indicate\nSatisfaction:<\/strong> When you\u2019ve enjoyed working on an assignment,\nlet the assigning attorney know.<\/li>
  23. Recognize\nYour Internal Clients:<\/strong> Your primary clients are the\npartners and more senior attorneys. <\/li>
  24. Create\nan Action Plan:<\/strong> Think about what your summer goals are\nand what you\u2019d like to learn while at the firm.<\/li>
  25. Join\nBar Associations:<\/strong> Membership is a wise investment in your\nknowledge base and professional network.<\/li>
  26. Get\nActive in the Community:<\/strong> These activities will give you\nexposure and offer you opportunities to begin building a network of contacts.<\/li>
  27. Network\nInside the Firm:<\/strong> Learn who is who in the firm. Socialize\nwith everyone in the firm.<\/li>
  28. Be\nthe First One in the Office:<\/strong> Lawyers will be\nimpressed to see you have arrived early and are already hard at work.<\/li>
  29. Be\non Time for Meetings:<\/strong> Be sure to arrive promptly even if others\ndo not.<\/li>
  30. Master\nTime Management: <\/strong>Devise a daily routine and stick to it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Students interested in landing a summer associate position should talk to the Office of Career and Professional Development<\/a>, participate in on campus interviews, and reach out to firms that specialize in the type of law students are interested in practicing with a targeted cover letter. Joining the ABA<\/a> is a great way for students to network and meet other lawyers and judges, as well as find mentors and learn about the practice of law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
