The participants were Sean Mullen,\nChristopher Odgers, Vasilios Zimarakos,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Christopher Gieger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vasilios Zimarakos won Best Oralist, and Sean Mullen and\nChristopher Odgers were named Best Team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twenty-one teams from around the nation\u2014including strong\nadvocacy schools and those with veterans projects or clinics, such as Baylor,\nBrooklyn, George Mason, University of Denver, and Widener\u2014participated in the\ncompetition.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timely topics<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The topics were cutting edge.\u00a0In fact, the second issue, which\u00a0Sean Mullen\u00a0and\u00a0Christopher Gieger argued, was whether there a constitutional due process violation when one Veterans Law Judge presided over the veteran\u2019s hearing and found him credible and a different Veterans Law Judge adjudicated his appeal and denied the claim based on a lack of credibility. This question was argued at the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) in just the last two months.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stetson teams argued in front of attorneys and judges, including\nStetson\u2019s very own, Judge Michael Allen, who all had expertise in veterans law.\nThe victories add to a trove of Stetson trophies outside the CAVC, giving the school\nfive Best Team plaques, eight Best Brief awards, and five Best Oralist wins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/simcox-stacey-rae\/index.php\">Stacey-Rae Simcox<\/a>, director of the Veterans Law Institute and Veterans Advocacy Clinic, and Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Brooke J. Bowman (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/bowman-brooke-j\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brooke J. Bowman<\/a>, director of Moot Court Board and interim Law Library director, coached this year\u2019s winning teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Veterans Law Institute<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stetson has a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/veterans\/\">Veterans Law Institute<\/a> that\nserves as a center for student veterans and pro bono service for members of the\nmilitary and veterans. To date, the Veterans Law Clinic has helped clients\nreceive over $1.7 million in back benefits the VA owed them, and their future\nbenefits total more than $19 million.
