Her working-class parents, who had migrated to Port-au-Prince from the countryside, emphasized education and studying hard. \u201cMy mom had a favorite saying: \u2018Life doesn\u2019t owe you anything.\u2019 The reality in Haiti is it was cutthroat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 11, Alexandre earned a scholarship to one of the city\u2019s top Catholic schools \u2014 \u201cWe read Voltaire and studied Latin\u201d \u2014 which set her up for later success at Colgate University, where in 1996 she was the first black valedictorian, and then as a law student at Harvard.
