{"id":29741,"date":"2020-10-30T17:35:32","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T21:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=29741"},"modified":"2020-12-04T09:33:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T14:33:21","slug":"florida-law-schools-consortium-for-racial-justice-hosts-first-forum-on-civil-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2020\/10\/30\/florida-law-schools-consortium-for-racial-justice-hosts-first-forum-on-civil-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Law Schools&#8217; Consortium for Racial Justice hosts first forum on civil rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Florida Law Schools\u2019 Consortium for Racial Justice held its formal launch with a timely panel on Oct. 27, 2020, called \u201cCivil Rights Litigation and Coalition Building in the 21st Century Forum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inaugural event, which was held virtually and open to students from all 12 Florida law schools, included a brief introduction to the FLSCRJ and a reiteration of the important role the Florida law school community will have in its work toward racial justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panel featured <a href=\"https:\/\/micheleforflorida.com\/about-michele-rayner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michele Rayner-Goolsby<\/a>, who will represent District 70 in the Florida House and will be one of the first openly LGBTQ women of color elected to Florida\u2019s Legislature, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JotakaEaddy?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jotaka L. Those individuals are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/FLSCRJ-local-contacts.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/FLSCRJ-local-contacts.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/FLSCRJ-local-contacts-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About FLSCRJ<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Deans of the 12 law schools in Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2020\/06\/24\/the-states-12-law-schools-propose-solidarity-and-unified-approach-with-new-florida-law-schools-consortium-for-racial-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formed the Florida Law Schools\u2019 Consortium for Racial Justice (FLSCRJ) in June 2020<\/a> in response to longstanding and current acts of racist violence.&nbsp; The collective aims to leverage the strengths and educational roles of every law school in the state to assist community organizations fighting for racial justice and policy reform throughout Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 12 law schools in Florida understand that law schools\u2019 highest duty is to train intellectually strong and culturally competent lawyers who seek justice.&nbsp; Inherent in legal training is the expressed expectation that lawyers hold a special responsibility to denounce injustice, particularly in the state of Florida.&nbsp;Law schools in Florida therefore have an obligation to teach students how to speak up when they see wrongs.&nbsp; FLSCRJ will emphasize lawyers\u2019 roles in advancing social justice and help law students develop the consciousness they need to speak out against inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each law school will designate at least one student fellow to work with FLSCRJ every year.&nbsp;
