If we pass, we may get to keep the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the mantra of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everglades.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Friends of the Everglades<\/a>, a simple and easy-to-remember reason why the biodiverse section of South Florida is so essential for preservation and restoration. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them,\u201d wrote the organization\u2019s founder, Marjory Stoneman Douglas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stoneman Douglas was a journalist, activist and author whose 1947 book, <em>The Everglades: River of Grass, <\/em>was an accessible analysis that helped drive awareness of the rareness of the Everglades. Today, members of Friends of the Everglades work to continue her legacy by compelling government agencies to comply with existing environmental laws, fighting any efforts to weaken such laws, and pushing initiatives to restore the historic flow of water through the Everglades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eve Samples, the organization\u2019s current executive director, spoke to Stetson Law students on Feb. 4, 2021, as part of The Edward and Bonnie Foreman Biodiversity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/speakers-conferences.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lecture Series<\/a>. She explained how, in early 1900s, Florida leaders thought it was a good idea to drain Lake Okeechobee to the east and west, disconnecting the \u201cRiver of Grass.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 18,000-square-mile greater Everglades system stretches from a chain of lakes near Orlando all the way down to Florida Bay, she said, adding that more than 50 percent of the water system has been diverted over time. As a result, toxic algae blooms are an increasing problem in Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee estuary, and St. Lucie River. Meanwhile, the Everglades and Florida Bay remain parched and suffering from hyper-salinity. Fertilizer runoff from agricultural lands accounts for 79 percent of the pollution in Lake Okeechobee and is a leading cause of toxic blue-green algae, which exacerbates naturally occurring red tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toxic algae and red tide have sickened people (research links it to ALS and liver disease), fish, marine mammals and birds, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/earth-systems\/blog\/red-tide-is-expensive-heres-why\/#:~:text=During%20the%202015%2D2016%20bloom,Floridians%20upwards%20of%20%241%20million.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negatively impacted<\/a> the state\u2019s aquaculture, tourism and hospitality industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samples said the three-pronged solution for Everglades restoration includes addressing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Infrastructure<\/strong> \u2013 meaning water storage and treatment protocols outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/ever\/learn\/nature\/cerp.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan<\/a>;<\/li><li><strong>Operations<\/strong> \u2013 meaning managing Lake Okeechobee with human health in mind rather than to appease the agricultural industry, as is the current practice; and<\/li><li><strong>Water quality<\/strong> \u2013 meaning actively enforcing pollution limits across the region. Florida has a long history of \u201cpresumption of compliance\u201d instead of thorough oversight. For example, state inspectors visited only 3,600 of 11,000 agricultural sites last year.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Law students can help, Samples said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Marjory-Stoneman-Douglas-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Marjory-Stoneman-Douglas-2.jpg\" alt=\"Marjory Stoneman Douglas\" class=\"wp-image-30037\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Marjory-Stoneman-Douglas-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Marjory-Stoneman-Douglas-2-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Marjory Stoneman Douglas<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, voice opposition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridamcores.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M-CORES<\/a> toll roads project, which proposes the construction of three north\/south highways cutting through the center of the state. Second, participate in the development of the new Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saj.usace.army.mil\/LOSOM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LOSOM<\/a>). Third, demand the Florida Legislature enforce mandatory pollution limits and mandatory septic inspections, as well as ban biosolids (partially treated human sludge). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But above all else, remember the advice of Marjory Stoneman Douglas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBe a nuisance where it counts. Do your part to inform and stimulate the public to join your action. Be depressed, discouraged, and disappointed at failure and the disheartening effects of ignorance, greed, corruption, and bad politics \u2013 but never give up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cSaving the Everglades is a test.
