Offering a program like this is one of the most&nbsp;&nbsp; valuable contributions philanthropic organizations and educational institutions such as Healthy St. Pete and Stetson Law can provide to the community,\u201d said Stetson Law Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/michele-alexandre.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mich\u00e8le Alexandre<\/a>. \u201cStetson Law has longstanding expertise in teaching students to think critically and advocate for vulnerable groups. We believe that these types of programs can create a positive ripple effect for the participants, their families, schools and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stetson Law officials recognized that, during the last 20 years, civics education and social action programming have decreased nationally. Students have little, if any, opportunity at the high school level to access the knowledge and tools they need to be advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/randall-russell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/randall-russell.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30168\" width=\"167\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/randall-russell.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/randall-russell-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/randall-russell-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Randy Russell<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a latent power in youth that is often overlooked. Racism takes a tremendous toll on our society and youth now see that in pronounced ways,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/healthystpete.foundation\/team\/randall-h-russell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Randy Russell<\/a>, Chief Executive Officer at the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg. \u201cBy pursuing deeper understanding of their personal identities and their role in a society, it becomes easier to envision how to become change makers striving for race equity in the community and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The summer session will be five full days during Summer 2021 and will serve as a pilot program for what officials plan to be a four-year effort. The curriculum will include two civics classes, two civil rights classes, and various engagement opportunities with community leaders and advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interested students must complete a short application, and all applicants will be reviewed and selected by a committee. In addition to Dean Alexandre, Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/judith-scully.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judith Scully<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/christine-cerniglia.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christine Cerniglia<\/a> will lead the program.
