The weeklong course is hosted by Stetson University College of Law, in partnership with Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Youth Civic Engagement Program will run from July 19-24, 2021, and applications are available at: <a href=\"http:\/\/stetson.edu\/law\/youth-program\">stetson.edu\/law\/youth-program<\/a>. The deadline to apply is May 31, 2021. &nbsp;All student participants in the summer program will receive a financial stipend to facilitate their participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course is designed for Pinellas County teenagers, between the ages of 15-17, considered underrepresented because of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic status, or school performance. A focus group of students helped identify curriculum topics, which could include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Self and Society<\/li><li>Social Justice<\/li><li>Gender Identity<\/li><li>Sexual Orientation<\/li><li>Poverty Law<\/li><li>Race and the Law<\/li><li>Human Rights<\/li><li>Civil Rights<\/li><li>Criminal Justice System<\/li><li>Social Media and Society<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the class will be virtual this year due to the pandemic, it will still be highly interactive and feature Stetson Law faculty and students, as well as local judges and attorney volunteers. The summer session will serve as a pilot program for what officials plan to be a four-year effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interested students must complete a short application, and all applicants will be reviewed and selected by a committee. In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/michele-alexandre.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dean Mich\u00e8le Alexandre<\/a>, Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/judith-scully.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judith Scully<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/christine-cerniglia.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christine Cerniglia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/roy-balleste.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roy Balleste<\/a> will lead the program. Offering a program like this is one of the most&nbsp;&nbsp;valuable contributions philanthropic organizations and educational institutions such as Healthy St. Pete and Stetson Law can provide to the community,\u201d said Stetson Law Dean Mich\u00e8le Alexandre. \u201cStetson Law has longstanding expertise in teaching students to think critically and advocate for vulnerable groups. We believe that these types of programs can create a positive ripple effect for the participants, their families, schools and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stetson Law officials recognized that, during the last 20 years, civics education and social action programming have decreased nationally.
