That\u2019s why renowned environmentalist Maggy Hurchalla wants to raise awareness of these pollutants \u2013 and is calling for stronger laws to curb their proliferation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/speakers-conferences.php\">Edward &amp; Bonnie Foreman Biodiversity Lecture Series<\/a>, Hurchalla spoke at a hybrid event on the Stetson University College of Law campus Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, on the eve of World Wetlands Day. Hurchalla\u2019s lecture focused on waterways in and around Lake Okeechobee, including the Everglades, the threat cyanobacteria overgrowth poses public health, and what she sees as lagging public policy when it comes to water resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lecture was titled \u201cOld Laws and New Health Threats.\u201d Cyanobacteria blooms are associated with wastewater runoff from mass-scale agricultural operations, water laden with nutrients that feed the blooms. Volumes of this polluted water are stored in Lake Okeechobee and are periodically released into the waters off the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur natural systems are hurting,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are suffering because of over-allocation of our water resources. We have given away more water than we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A longtime activist who was an early advocate for Everglades restoration, Hurchalla was a Martin County Commissioner from 1974 to 1994. Her sister was former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno. They are approximately 3.5 billion years old. Without them, we wouldn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, spirulina, a popular dietary supplement, is a cyanobacteria, as are countless other microorganisms. Many occur naturally in Florida waterways \u2013 Hurchalla said the overgrowths seen in Lake Okeechobee would not occur in a pristine environment \u2013 but climate change, industrial agriculture and the destruction of mangrove ecosystems create a perfect storm for harmful overgrowths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMassive cyanobacteria blooms are not natural,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People living near the outbreak have seen an increase in rashes, nausea and respiratory problems, she said, adding that she worries about children living along Lake Okeechobee\u2019s shores, and how the blooms might affect their long-term health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey swim in it, they eat the fish, and they breathe [near it],\u201d she said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the potentially detrimental impacts, Hurchalla says, policies at the local and state level surrounding cyanobacteria and water management are utterly lacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-scaled-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-scaled-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hurchalla-Gardner-Biodiversity-2.1.22-1320x880.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>The event included a question and answer session in which students and other guests asked questions about Florida&#8217;s water policies.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event gave students and others in attendance an opportunity to learn about a real-world example of the intersection between law and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hope that students better understand the threats to Florida&#8217;s water quality, and I am certain that they will be inspired by Maggy&#8217;s example,\u201d said Professor Royal Gardner, Director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/international\/biodiversity\/\">Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy<\/a> at Stetson Law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Hurchalla, the event was an opportunity to inspire action through direct involvement and engaging local and state officials on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s something more important you can do about water resources,\u201d she said. \u201cVote, vote, vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Everglades are a body of water recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramsar.org\/about-the-convention-on-wetlands-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ramsar Convention<\/a>, an intergovernmental treaty that aims to encourage responsible wetlands management and the entity behind World Wetlands Day.
