The team consisted of students <strong>Elizabeth Kellar<\/strong>, <strong>Jessica Merker<\/strong>, and <strong>Peter Farrell<\/strong>, who had been preparing for this championship since October with coaching from Professor <strong>Brooke Bowman<\/strong> and Stetson Alumnus <strong>James Nealon<\/strong> and assistance from Professors <strong>Louis Virelli<\/strong> and <strong>Roberta Flowers<\/strong> and a number of alums who competed on previous teams in this competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A headshot of law student Peter Farrell\" class=\"wp-image-30852\" width=\"186\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Peter-Farrell.jpg 1088w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Peter Farrell<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work paid off: the team won a semifinalist award\u2014and Merker was awarded third-best oralist. The team contended with the likes of NYU, William &amp; Mary, GW, and Seton Hall before besting Texas Tech in the quarterfinal round. In a nail-biter of a semifinal round, Stetson lost by just 0.18\u2014less than a quarter of a point\u2014to Chicago-Kent, the finalist in this year\u2019s championship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Elizabeth-Kellar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Elizabeth-Kellar.jpg\" alt=\"A headshot of law student Elizabeth Kellar\" class=\"wp-image-30850\" width=\"198\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Elizabeth-Kellar.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Elizabeth-Kellar-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Elizabeth-Kellar-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Elizabeth Kellar<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event marks the tenth time Stetson has taken part in this rigorous competition. Stetson has made it to the elimination rounds six times, including four times as semifinalists, one time as finalists, and one time as the national champions (in 2015).&nbsp; A Stetson advocate has also been recognized as one of the top oralists four times\u2014two best oralist awards, one second-best oralist award, and one third-best oralist award.&nbsp; And Stetson teams have won two best brief awards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the competition\u2019s judges were U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Kim Wardlaw and U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jennifer Elrod.
