On August 5, the office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of the three alums to benches in Hillsborough and Hernando counties, which adds to the ever-growing number of important roles Stetson alums hold in courtrooms, legislatures, and other critical areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marc Makholm, Hillsborough County Court<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/MSM-2021-HCSO-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31571\" width=\"155\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/MSM-2021-HCSO-pic.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/MSM-2021-HCSO-pic-400x500.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><figcaption>Stetson Law alumus The Hon. Marc Makholm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years working in both private practice and public service, Makholm was appointed to the bench in Hillsborough County to fill the vacancy left by Judge James Moody III. For the prior 11 years, Makholm served as general counsel to the Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office. While working as a criminal defense attorney in Tampa, <em>The Tampa Bay Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/archive\/2010\/05\/16\/the-hardest-loss-to-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profiled him<\/a> in 2010. He received his B.A. from the University of Florida and his J.D. from Stetson Law. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillsclerk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hillsborough Clerk of the Circuit Court<\/a> is headquartered in downtown Tampa, with satellite locations in Brandon and Plant City.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/CSO-Image-lores.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31569\" width=\"152\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/CSO-Image-lores.jpg 563w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/CSO-Image-lores-389x500.jpg 389w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><figcaption>Stetson Law alumna The Hon. Cynthia Oster<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cynthia Oster, Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following four years of service as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillsclerk.com\/About-Us\/Service-Options-and-Locations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hillsborough County<\/a> court judge, Oster was appointed to the bench in Florida\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fljud13.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thirteenth Judicial Circuit<\/a>, which covers Hillsborough County. Prior to becoming a judge, she spent 18 years as a senior county attorney in the Hillsborough County Attorney\u2019s office. She earned her bachelor\u2019s from the University of Florida and her J.D. from Stetson Law. Her appointment fills the vacancy left by the departure of Judge Emmett Battles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Barbara-Jo Bell, Hernando County Court<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A native of Spring Hill, Bell has been working as an assistant state attorney in Florida\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuit5.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fifth Judicial Circuit<\/a> for a year. Prior to that, she spent years as an assistant public defender. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Tampa and her J.D. from Stetson Law. Her appointment fills the vacancy left in the wake of the departure of Judge Kristen Healis. The <a href=\"https:\/\/hernandoclerk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hernando County Clerk of the Circuit Court<\/a> has a headquarters in Brooksville and has a second location in Spring Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More recent Stetson Law alums-turned-judges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graduates of Stetson Law aren\u2019t just earning judicial appointments in the Tampa Bay area. Recent notable bench appointments for alums include Natasha R. Shaw, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/bigislandgazette.com\/chief-justice-appoints-district-district-family-court-judges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appointed to a newly established judgeship in Hawaii\u2019s District Family Court<\/a> in March of 2022.
