{"id":31734,"date":"2022-10-14T13:23:25","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T17:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/?p=31734"},"modified":"2022-11-17T16:55:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T21:55:57","slug":"writer-scholar-stephanie-burt-talks-poetry-and-belonging-at-stetson-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2022\/10\/14\/writer-scholar-stephanie-burt-talks-poetry-and-belonging-at-stetson-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Writer, Scholar Stephanie Burt Talks Poetry and Belonging at Stetson Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stephanie-Burt_news.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Kristen Adams and Dr. Stephanie Burt sit on a stage in the Great Hall; Dr. Burt is reading from a book of her poetry.\" class=\"wp-image-31736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stephanie-Burt_news.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Stephanie-Burt_news-500x331.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Stephanie Burt (right) reads from a book of her poetry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to the Stetson Law students, faculty, and staff gathered in the Great Hall as well as students and faculty joining remotely from Stetson University\u2019s main campus in DeLand, scholar Dr. <strong>Stephanie Burt<\/strong> explored the relationship between one\u2019s work and oneself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A poet, literary critic, and professor of English at Harvard, Burt gave a talk titled \u201cProfessional Identity and Belonging.\u201d It was presented as part of Stetson Law\u2019s LGBTQ+ History Month events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the conversation, Burt read excerpts of her poetry and related them to critical life events, including \u201cHermit Crab,\u201d a poem inspired by her struggles with her identity before she ultimately came out as a trans woman in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connecting poetry &amp; law<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Law Professor <strong>Kristen Adams<\/strong>, who hosted Burt on stage, it was <em>After Callimachus<\/em>, Burt\u2019s 2020 collection of translations and adaptations of works by the Greek poet Callimachus, that had an interesting appeal for legal scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt engages my lawyer brain in a different way,\u201d Adams, who teaches courses that relate poetry and law, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burt said she could see why someone with a background in law and legal theory might find the text interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe poems really are often acts of persuasion, and often they\u2019re acts of recitation,\u201d Burt said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Callimachus had a way of challenging incorrect or outdated ways of thinking, she added, and voiced his challenges \u201cin a way that is sympathetic and funny rather than boastful and from on high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Community &amp; belonging<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he introduced Burt, 3L Kyle Ridgeway said he was grateful that he and his classmates could be part of a conversation with a celebrated scholar whose work explores important issues like identity and social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDialogues such as the ones we are having this evening are important for us to be a community that welcomes others to express themselves in their professional and personal identity and feel as though they belong,\u201d Ridgeway, a member of Lambda Legal Society\u2019s Stetson Law Chapter as well as the college\u2019s Social Justice Advocacy Concentration program, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A \u201cquiet\u201d space<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A well-known literary critic and poet, Burt has published three poetry collections and two critical books on poetry, including, most recently, the poetry collection <em>We Are Mermaids<\/em>. The <em>New York Times Book Review<\/em>, the <em>London Review of Books<\/em>, the <em>Boston Review<\/em>, and many other publications have featured her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Law Professor <strong>Anne Mullins<\/strong> commended the audience for taking time away from study and work to be part of the \u201cquiet space\u201d where, outside of rigorous schedules and nonstop chatter, they can explore critical, fundamental questions through conversations about art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe <em>important<\/em>is winning,\u201d Mullins said at the beginning of the event,\u201d Mullins said. \u201cWhen we give ourselves the opportunity to engage in poetry, and literature, and art, and music\u2026 we open ourselves up to the invitation to that quiet space.
