The field can expect significant changes in light of the incoming federal administration. With a new roster featuring some of higher-ed\u2019s most prominent thought leaders, Stetson\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/conferences\/highered\/home\/\">National Conference on Law and Higher Education<\/a> will help industry professionals face those challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking place March 5-9, 2025 at the stunning Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, the conference fosters compelling conversations known to influence law and policy in the higher ed space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The keynote speakers are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>American Council on Education (ACE) Senior Vice President of Government Relations and National Engagement <strong>Jonathan Fansmith<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jim Moore<\/strong>, senior advisor for\u00a0<em>Clery Act<\/em>\u00a0compliance and campus safety operations with the U.S. Department of Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and Law Professor <strong>Patricia E. Salkin<\/strong>, who is senior V.P. of academic affairs and provost of graduate and professional divisions at Touro University Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A premier event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the year, staff and leadership of Stetson\u2019s Center for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy work tirelessly to identify emerging topics for discussion and secure influential figures in the higher education industry who can offer insights and updates throughout the conference, which is now in its 46<sup>th<\/sup> year. Popular sessions include the Crystal Ball session, during which panelists make informed (and often humorous) predictions about higher ed in the coming year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStetson\u2019s leadership in analyzing developments in higher education law and policy has never been more critical than in this moment of transformation at the federal policy level,\u201d said Professor <strong>Peter Lake<\/strong>, who directs the Center and chairs the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event\u2019s 2025 theme is \u201cThe 2025 Compliance Reset<em>:&nbsp;<\/em>Navigating the New Landscape of Federal and State Regulatory Mandates.\u201d It will explore the potentially profound federal law and policy changes \u2013 particularly the Supreme Court\u2019s <em>Chevron<\/em> and <em>Corner Post<\/em> cases \u2013 that will alter higher education compliance requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake, a leading higher ed law expert, wrote a piece, \u201cManagement by Judiciary,\u201d for <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em> following the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s <em>Chevron <\/em>decision that garnered the attention of college presidents, boards and administrators across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not be lured into thinking that this is the end of dynamic, challenging, at times inconsistent compliance mandates for higher education. Instead, higher education\u2019s lived regulatory experiences likely will only become more complex and legalistic,\u201d Lake wrote in the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other topics to be explored include artificial intelligence\u2019s impacts on higher education, academic freedom, athletics, and crisis management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the keynote speakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake and his team are thrilled to host the high-caliber speakers who will headline the event. They represent a broad range of perspectives from within the federal government, university administration, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jonathan Fansmith, Senior Vice President, Government Relations and National Engagement, American Council on Education (ACE)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leading ACE\u2019s efforts to engage federal policymakers on issues affecting colleges and universities, Fansmith coordinates the government relations response of approximately 60 higher education associations in Washington, DC. His work involves representation before Congress, administrative agencies, and the federal courts. Fansmith\u2019s writing has appeared in publications ranging from <em>The Washington Post<\/em> to <em>The Journal of College and University Law<\/em>, and he is a frequent speaker for association, academic, and corporate audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acenet.edu\/Pages\/Bio\/Jonathan-Fansmith.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See Fansmith\u2019s full bio.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jim Moore, Senior Advisor for\u00a0<em>Clery Act<\/em>\u00a0Compliance and Campus Safety Operations, U.S. Department of Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serving as the federal government\u2019s top expert on the&nbsp;<em>Clery Act<\/em>, the&nbsp;<em>Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act<\/em>, and other campus safety and crime prevention initiatives, Moore has led numerous high-profile investigations, including the Department\u2019s examinations of the Jerry Sandusky and Larry Nassar scandals at Penn State and Michigan State, respectively. He has helped institutions develop sexual assault prevention programs and leads the Department of Education\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Clery Act<\/em>&nbsp;training, technical assistance, and outreach initiatives.
