Reece Smith, Jr. Lecturer, drew laughter and tears from her audience as she shared stories of civil disobedience and thoughts on activism in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a rare opportunity for the community to get a glimpse of Stetson Law\u2019s popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2022\/07\/13\/eye-opening-civil-rights-travel-experience-returns-to-stetson-law\/\">Civil Rights Summer Travel Course<\/a>. Reece Smith, Jr. Lecturer, Janice Wesley Kelsey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNormally we go to her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, but this evening we are absolutely thrilled to host her in our home,\u201d said Law Professor <strong>Kristen Adams<\/strong>, noting how Kelsey is one of the course\u2019s most beloved speakers as she introduced Kelsey. \u201cShe is a national treasure, and we are enormously honored to host her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelsey\u2019s book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/36875667-i-woke-up-with-my-mind-on-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>I Woke Up With My Mind on Freedom<\/em><\/a>, chronicles her experience as a \u201cfoot soldier\u201d in the Birmingham, Alabama Children\u2019s Crusade. In her lecture, she recounted how she first got into the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Becoming a Civil Rights \u201cfoot soldier\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until the spring of 1963, 16-year-old <strong>Janice Wesley Kelsey<\/strong> hadn\u2019t thought much about civil rights. The Birmingham, Alabama native was focused on things you\u2019d expect to be on a teen\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was in 11<sup>th<\/sup> grade, and I thought all was well in my world,\u201d she said. \u201cI was interested in dancing and dating and being popular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All around her, the seeds of a movement were sprouting. A friend who attended Monday evening meetings discussing how to fight segregation would speak passionately about the movement at school on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat she was saying sparked my interest,\u201d Kelsey said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Video-Wm-Reece-Smith-Banquet-2025-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The back of the room as an audience watches a video. Reece Smith, Jr. Lecture.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She started to attend student nonviolence workshops where she was shown filmstrips of demonstrations in other cities during in which demonstrators were spit on, hit, and pulled off the lunch counter stools. The organizer warned that similar things would happen to those who got involved in the movement, but they cannot fight back. \u201cThis is a nonviolent movement,\u201d she recalls being told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Skipping school to join a movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the first demonstration took place in early May of 1963, organizers warned the marchers they would likely be arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelsey went to school that morning, but wasn\u2019t planning to stay. During first period, she asked a young teacher about <a>potential<\/a> consequences of leaving for the march.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI asked her, \u2018suppose some kids walked out of class today. Are they all going to fail?\u2019\u201d Wesley recalled. \u201cAnd she said, \u2018if everybody walks, there\u2019s nobody to fail.\u2019 That gave me all the encouragement I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The marchers gathered at the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Street Baptist Church, Kelsey recalled, and people were everywhere, including police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singing \u2018We Shall Overcome,\u201d they walked out of the sanctuary in pairs. But they didn\u2019t get far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe officer who stopped us was carrying a baton, he was wearing a gun, and he said we were in violation of a city ordinance. He said \u2018you cannot parade without a permit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of her fellow demonstrators began chanting \u2018we are not afraid,\u2019 which gave her the courage to stay in the line and face being arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it happened, Kelsey lied about her age so she could go to the same jail as her best friend, who was one year her junior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things intensified in the coming months. Authorities targeted protestors with high-powered <a>firehoses<\/a> that tore away demonstrators\u2019 hair and clothes. President John F. Reece Smith, Jr. Banquet (formerly known as Inns of Court).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Progress and tragedy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Successes came as the movement grew and national sentiment shifted in favor of the movement \u2013 but so did more violence, including bombings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, September 15, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/baptist-street-church-bombing\">white supremacists bombed the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Street Baptist Church<\/a>, killing four Black girls. Kelsey didn\u2019t go to that church, but she knew the victims and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe surprise wasn\u2019t that the church had been bombed, but on a Sunday morning?\u201d Kelsey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following year, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed and forced the desegregation of schools and other public places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelsey went on to become an educator, but said she often experienced survivor\u2019s guilt. Although it took years to bring those responsible for the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Street Baptist Church bombing to justice, Kelsey said she felt encouraged when it finally happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inspiring others to be brave<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a question-and-answer session following her talk, Kelsey was asked how students and legal professionals can tackle current-day efforts to roll back civil rights. Suggesting that law students \u201care in the perfect position\u201d to be advocates for their communities, she urged the audience to put their talents, knowledge, and passion to work on good causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy hope is in you. You young people,\u201d Kelsey said. \u201cI\u2019m too old to go back to jail. There is hope because you have prepared yourself for the challenges you are now facing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the lecture, Law Professor Rebecca Morgan, a nationally known scholar in elder law and founder of Stetson\u2019s Center for Elder Justice, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2025\/04\/03\/prof-morgan-honored-with-wm-reece-smith-jr-public-service-award\/\">honored with the Wm.
