The award-winning scholar is also Founding Director of the prestigious <a>Plea Bargaining<\/a> Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Author of five books and dozens of book chapters and articles, Dervan is also the founder and author <em>of The <a>Plea Bargaining<\/a> Blog<\/em> and a contributing editor to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lawprofessors.typepad.com\/whitecollarcrime_blog\/\"><em>White Collar Crime Prof Blog<\/em><\/a> (a member of the Law Professor Blogs Network), for which Stetson Law Professor <strong>Ellen Podgor<\/strong> serves as editor. In 2006, she founded the nationally recognized Habeas Project, which provides pro bono representation in post-conviction cases across Georgia. She was awarded the 2013 Shanara Gilbert Emerging Clinician Award by the Clinical Legal Education Section of the American Association of Law Schools in recognition of her work with that clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gerwig directs Mercer\u2019s unique Introduction to Client Counseling program, and her textbook, <em>What Brings You Here Today? An Introduction to Client Counseling<\/em>&nbsp;was published in 2021. Gerwig teaches and writes in the areas of criminal law, human rights, law &amp; humanities, and professional responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/sarah-gerwig.php\">See Gerwig\u2019s full bio.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>James Mastracchio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>An accomplished tax litigator with clientele from around the globe, <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winston.com\/en\/professionals\/mastracchio-james-nicholas\">Mastracchio is a partner at Winston &amp; Strawn LLP<\/a>, where he has co-led the firm\u2019s tax controversy practice in its Washington, DC office since 2021. He will teach federal income tax and tax practice and procedure as a visiting professor at Stetson Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the distinction of having been lead counsel on international criminal cases in matters involving alleged tax violations, Mastracchio has represented clients before the U.S. Department of Justice and other regulatory bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mastracchio&nbsp;served as an Independent Examiner in Zurich, Switzerland and for the U.S. DOJ\u2019s Swiss Bank Program and advised overseas financial institutions as well as government agencies on the implementation of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. He was highly influential in the interpretation of inter-governmental agreements and treaty protocols as they relate to tax investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ira Nathenson<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ira-nathenson.jpg\" alt=\"A man in glasses and a backwards hat takes a selfie against the backdrop of a city on a river surrounded by hills.\" class=\"wp-image-33481\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Ira Nathenson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>A passionate scholar <\/a><a>in the area of<\/a> intellectual property, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nathenson.org\/about\/\">Nathenson<\/a> joins Stetson Law as a distinguished visiting professor after retiring from St. Thomas University Law School in Miami, where he founded the school\u2019s intellectual property certificate program. While at Stetson, he will teach civil procedure and intellectual property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citing his eclectic interests, Nathenson looks for unexpected but compelling connections between seemingly disconnected areas like procedure, human rights, and popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathenson <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/cf_dev\/AbsByAuth.cfm?per_id=109749\">has written extensively on copyright law and other IP matters<\/a>, &nbsp;has served as Chair of the Section on Civil Procedure for the&nbsp;Association of American Law Schools, and runs a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nathenson.org\/courses\/civpro\/\">website<\/a> featuring extensive civil procedure study resources as well as a companion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@ProfessorNathenson\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/ira-nathenson.php\">See Nathenson\u2019s full bio.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Professor Emerita Candace Zierdt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ZierdtCandace_250x300.jpg\" alt=\"A blonde woman in a colorful shirt smiles in front of a stack of books.\" class=\"wp-image-33482\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Candace Zierdt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having recently retired from Stetson Law following nearly two decades on faculty, Law Professor Emerita <strong>Candace Zierdt <\/strong>returns to teach contracts in the fall 2025 semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zierdt began teaching contracts and commercial law at Stetson in 2006. Prior to that, she taught at the University of North Dakota School of Law from 1990 to 2006. She has chaired the American Bar Association\u2019s UCC committee, the Article 1 subcommittee, and the Article 2 subcommittee. She is also a member of the American Law Institute and the UCC committee for the Uniform Law Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was director of Stetson Law\u2019s Bruce R. Jacob Visiting Professor Program from its founding in 2009 until 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January of 2025, she received the American Association of Law Schools&#8217; (AALS) Section on Commercial and Consumer Law Mentorship Award at the AALS meeting in San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/law\/faculty\/home\/candace-zierdt.php\">See Zierdt\u2019s full bio.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other new faculty members include <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2025\/09\/26\/an-international-focus-for-newest-full-time-faculty\/\">two new full-time professors<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/law\/news\/index.php\/2025\/09\/26\/meet-the-newest-bruce-r-jacob-visiting-assistant-professors\/\">two Bruce R.
