Students at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Fla., volunteered more than 800 hours of community service on Jan. 10 as they participated in more than 100 community events throughout the Tampa Bay area.<\/p>\n

First-year Stetson Law student A.J. Josey was busy volunteering at the Enoch Davis Center in St. Petersburg on Monday interviewing community members facing the difficult decision of declaring bankruptcy. “It brings you back to reality. It puts things in perspective,” Josey said.<\/p>\n

The day-long program, called Practicing Professionalism Day: Commitment, Competency and Character, is designed to help Stetson law students become responsible members of the legal profession. The program was created by professor Roberta K. Flowers and Stetson dean of student life Michael Farley.<\/p>\n

Student Kim Hamill wore a hardhat Monday morning as she helped her team with a construction project for Habitat for Humanity in Clearwater. “I think it’s great to get out here and do something good for the community,” said Hamill.<\/p>\n

“I picked this opportunity because it’s hands-on,” said student Amar Agha, another volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity project. “It’s also a good bonding experience with all the other 1Ls before we jump back into the swing of things.”<\/p>\n

Spring classes began for Stetson Law students the following day.<\/p>\n
