Registered therapy dogs and their handlers are available in the atrium of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/library\/\">Dolly &amp; Homer Hand Law Library<\/a>\u00a0to work with law students for about an hour each day for seven days during the exam period through mid-December.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_7063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7063\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/closeup_Hans.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7063 \" title=\"Hans, a registered therapy dog, visits students during the exam period.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/closeup_Hans-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Hans, a registered therapy dog, visits students during the exam period.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hans, a registered therapy dog, visits students during the exam period.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAll of us in the library sympathize with the stress that law students face around exam time,\u201d said Professor Rebecca Trammell, director of the law library at Stetson.\u00a0\u201cWe hope that this project will provide a relaxing change of pace for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the dogs are different breeds and sizes, and registered with Therapy Dogs International, a volunteer organization dedicated to regulating, testing and registration of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrained\u00a0 therapy animals and handlers provide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deltasociety.org\/Document.Doc?id=10\">animal-assisted-activities or animal-assisted-therapy<\/a> in a wide range of settings including hospitals, hospices , disaster sites, schools, shelters, and many other places,\u201d said Professor Peter Fitzgerald, an expert in international and commercial law and animal law who has been involved with Golden Retriever\u00a0 rescue for close to 15 years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7065\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Amanda_Hans_SMALL1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7065\" title=\"Alumna Amanda Hanson visits with Hans during the dog therapy program at Stetson.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.law.stetson.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Amanda_Hans_SMALL1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Alumna Amanda Hanson visits with Hans during the dog therapy program at Stetson.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alumna Amanda Hanson visits with Brando during the dog therapy program at Stetson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBoth their training and work is different from that associated with a service animal, but the benefits \u2013 such as decreased blood pressure and stress levels and improved overall emotional well-being \u2013 have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdi-dog.org\/images\/TDIStudy.pdf\">demonstrated<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deltasociety.org\/Page.aspx?pid=371\">numerous studies<\/a>\u00a0over many years,&#8221; said Professor Fitzgerald.\u00a0&#8220;Making therapy dogs available to help manage stress during our students\u2019 exams is just a logical extension of the role they serve elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>Professor Fitzgerald\u00a0brought his dog Duncan, Professor Ellen Podgor\u00a0brought her dog Hans, and Stetson Law alumna Amanda Hanson brought her dog Brando to the library at Stetson Law in Gulfport to work with students. All are trained therapy dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Brando, a four-year-old rescued German Shepherd dog, was the first therapy dog to accompany a witness into a deposition in the 6th circuit court.
