duPont-Ball Summer Clubs are Here!

Below are descriptions and intro videos for eight virtual clubs and interests groups members of the duPont-Ball Library team have decided to run this summer. Pick one (or more) that fits your passions, then sign up to join us for fun online discussion! All club meetings will take place in Microsoft Teams. See blurbs and videos below for further details.

YA book club – Dani Pleines

Hey fellow Anarchists. Do you miss going out into the world and wreaking havoc? I have the perfect way for us to pass time while we’re stuck inside our lairs: read Archenemies, the second book in Marissa Myer’s trilogy, Renegades. We’ll have three meetings, every other Friday, to discuss ideas like character motives, plot predictions, and fun hypotheticals, like our fantasy cast for a Renegades movie! All Stetson-enrolled (Summer/Fall) book club members will receive a complementary  Archenemies eBook and Cultural Credit. So join us now! Email dpleines@stetson.edu with subject line “Book Club” to sign up.

History of Stetson University club – Kelly Larson, Sue Ryan

The Stetson History club will meet every other week to discuss various topics in campus history. Archivist Kelly Larson and Dean Sue Ryan will be on hand to answer all your questions, show you some of the treasures in the archives, and even quiz you on a bit of Stetson trivia! Meetings will occur every other Thursday at 3:30 PM starting on May 28th. Email kllarson@stetson.edu with subject line “Stetson History” to sign up.

Film club – Elizabeth Martino

Stuck at home and burning through your to-watch list? Join us in movie club to discover some new favorites and reexamine old classics.  This summer we’ll look at coming-of-age movies, why they hold such significance for us, and talk about our personal favorites.  We’ll pick a different movie to watch before every meeting on alternate Fridays, starting May 29th and running through July 10th. Films are available to Stetson students and employees for free through the library’s streaming services. Grab your popcorn and let’s talk movies together! Email ecmartino@stetson.edu with subject line “Movies” to sign up.

Theme parks club – Chris Finkle

Theme parks are fascinating nexus points of overlapping disciplines – art, engineering, commerce, cuisine, logistics, performance, and so much more. Their history stretches back a century and their footprint spans the globe, but the seat of their power is just an hour away in Orlando. Come discuss the triumphs, failures, and idiosyncrasies of the parks with other fans! There will be five meetings, every other Thursday from May 21st to July 16th. Email cfinkle@stetson.edu with subject line “Theme Parks” to sign up.

Creative writing club – Kelly Larson, Chris Finkle

Nothing is more valuable for polishing your writing skills than working in a community of other writers. Guided by three weeks of poetry prompts and three weeks of fiction prompts, we will discuss our own and each other’s writing, culminating in a showcase week at the end of summer semester. Meetings will occur every Wednesday at 1 pm. Email cfinkle@stetson.edu or kllarson@stetson.edu with the subject line “Creative Writing” to sign up.

Paranormal club – Debbi Dinkins

The duPont-Ball Library’s Paranormal Club will discuss ghosts during the summer 2020 session. Specifically, we will talk about the popularity of ghosts and ghost hunting as a form of entertainment. Club members will watch examples of television shows about ghost hunters, psychics, celebrity ghost experiences, and then discuss. Discussions may challenge your beliefs about life after death and the existence of ghosts. Additionally, we will talk about how some ghost hunting celebrities have leveraged their fame into other industries such as the travel industry and product endorsement. Club members will help guide discussions.

The Paranormal Club will meet virtually during the summer session. Four meetings are planned but more may be scheduled during the semester. The first meeting is Tuesday, May 26th, at 7 pm. Email ddinkins@stetson.edu with subject line “Paranormal” to sign up.

Binge-watching club – Jennifer Corbin

The Binge-watching Club will discuss the phenomenon of binge-watching and we’ll do some binge-watching. Club members will recommend their favorite shows and share information about where they go to find out about upcoming series and release dates for new seasons. We will talk about what re-watching favorite shows means during a lockdown. Other topics of discussion may include the pros and cons of various streaming services, streaming services available through libraries, the popularity of re-watch podcasts, and staying healthy while binge-watching. The group will choose a show* to binge-watch individually and discuss it at our final meeting. Email jcorbin1@stetson.edu with subject line “Binge Watch” to sign up. This club will meet 4 times on Thursdays, June 18, June 25, July 2, and July 9 from 4 pm to 5 pm.

Requirements: must have access to Netflix.

*Tiger King is not an option.

Conspiracy Theory Club – Bijan Fallahi and Colette Cacciola

Are we being lied to about the origin of the coronavirus? Did forces within the US government assassinate JFK? What really happened at Roswell? If you have a burning passion to unearth the truth, or, you know, are mildly curious and have nothing better to do while practicing social distancing, grab a tin foil hat and join our discussion! We will have five meetings, every other Friday from May 22nd to July 17th. Each meeting will cover a specific conspiracy theory. Email bfallahi@stetson.edu with subject line “Conspiracy” to sign up.
