New tactic against Jehovah's Witnesses:  charge them with economic crime

CRIMINAL CASE OPENED ON INCIDENT OF FINANCING EXTREMIST ACTIVITY IN SHUYA

The Investigation Department for the city of Shuya of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia (SUSKR) for Ivanovo oblast has opened a criminal case on the basis of indications of the crime provided for in part 1 of article 282.3 of the Criminal Code of the RF (collection of resources for support of the activity of an extremist organization).

 

According to the account of the investigation, since the summer of 2017 until the present time, a 40-year-old resident of the city of Shuya, who is an adherent of the religious organization of the "Administrative Center of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia," which is prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation, organized a collection of financial resources intended for supporting the activity of a structural subdivision of the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses in the city of Shuya.

 

At the present time, the question of the application of a measure for assuring appearance of the perpetrator is being resolved.

 

A complex of search operation events and investigative actions is being conducted with regard to the criminal case, aimed at establishing all persons who participated in the commission of an extremist crime and at discovering other instances of criminal activity, and a collection and registration of evidence obtained is being conducted.

 

The crime was discovered by personnel of the Directorate of Economic Security and Combating Corruption (UEBPK) of the directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) of Russia for Ivanovo oblast, along with the Center for Combating Extremism of the directorate of the MVD of Russia for Ivanovo oblast.

POLICE PERSONNEL CLOSE CHANNEL FOR FINANCING EXTREMIST ORGANIZATION IN IVANOVO OBLAST

Personnel of the Directorate for Economic Security of the UMVD of Russia for Ivanovo oblast, along with operatives of the Center for Combating Extremism, discovered and documented a case of collection of financial resources intended for the financial support of the activity of an extremist organization.

 

Operatives established that a 40-year-old resident of the city of Shuya organized a collection of cash in the treasury of a local division of an extremist organization that has been banned by a court decision.

 

The aforementioned citizen collected financial resources in the period from August 2017 to the present time. It has been established that the suspect, who engaged in the collection of money, certainly knew that the activity of the organization had been ruled to be extremist and was forbidden on the territory of the Russian Federation by the procedure established by law.

 

On 29 May 2018, the Investigation Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for Ivanovo oblast opened a criminal case on the basis of part 1 of article 282.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation—"financing extremist activity."

 

The maximum penalty for this article is up to 8 years incarceration. The suspect has been placed in a temporary holding cell. (tr. by PDS, posted 31 May 2018)
