R.P.Ts. APPRECIATES PUTIN'S ATTENTION TO TRADITIONAL RUSSIAN VALUES
Interfax-Religiia, 15 January 2020
The Russian Orthodox Church greatly appreciates the attention of Russian President Vladimir Putin to traditional values, which he shared in his annual message to parliament.
"This address was extremely focused and substantive and, of course, in the first place gave attention to many specifics, to numbers and to the serious and fundamental changes that were outlined for the existence of the family. But I would like to say that in any case such words as 'values' and 'dignity' resounded as a pervasive theme," Vladimir Legoida, the head of the synodal Department for Relations of Church with Society and News Media, told Interfax.
He said that after speaking early in the address about preserving the nation, the president said it is very important that there be many people in Russia, but he also emphasized that those values for which these people will live are important. "And of course this is a most important point for the church, which unites the material and the non-material, and which sets the hierarchy of values" Legoida said.
Among other important aspects, he cited the fact that the president linked the flourishing of the country with the well-being of citizens, "that is, the individual again occupied the center of the president's message, but it is the individual focused upon traditional values; this was evident in that part where he talked about the family."
In addition, Legoida said it was fundamental that the president talked about education as the unity of teaching and training.
Summing up, the representative of the church declared that "this was a message simultaneously of a state official of the highest rank and the leader of the nation, who relies on fundamental categories of value." (tr. by PDS, posted 15 January 2020)
