Jehovah's Witness wins appeal against forced psychiatric examination

APPEALS COURT IN KHANTY-MANSI RULES FORCED HOSPITALIZATION OF BELIEVER IN PSYCHIATRIC CLINIC ILLEGAL

Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, 2 April 2020

On 5 March 2020 a court of the Khanty-Mansi autonomous district Yugra overturned the order of Judge Tatiana Sliusareva of the Surgut city court sending Timofei Zhukov for a 30-day psychiatric expert analysis in Ekaterinburg. The arrest and the hospitalization the believer already has gone through were illegal.

The conduct of an in-patient forensic psychiatric examination was ordered for Timofei Zhukov by the Surgut city court on 16 January 2020. The believer appealed this order.

On 5 February 2020, however, Timofei Zhukov was, essentially, kidnapped in Khanty-Mansi and taken off to an unknown destination. Later it was learned that he was taken to the Sverdlovsk oblast psychiatric hospital in Ekaterinburg.

On 19 February 2020, upon the completion of the expert examination, Timofei Zhukov left the hospital. Whether the believer will request compensation for the illegal actions of the security forces is still unknown. (tr. by PDS, posted 2 April 2020)
