Ukrainian crime bureau denies interfering in church question

CASE OF TOMOS AGAINST POROSHENKO OPENED ON FILARET'S COMPLAINT

Ukrainiskaia Pravda, 19 June 2020

The State Bureau of Investigation [GBR] does not intend to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the creation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine [PTsU], and it explains that the case against the fifth president, Petro Poroshenko, was opened back in 2019 on the basis of a declaration by the primate of the UPTsKP, Filaret.

Direct quote: "The case was opened in November 2019 by the SBU [Security Service of Ukraine] on the basis of a declaration by Filaret. The reason for doing this was a complaint against the government leadership mainly because the money that the UPTsKP received, primarily from its foreign representations, is being paid to Constantinople since the creation of the PTsU.

"This is a P.R. move on the part of Petro Poroshenko and we do not intend to play on the topic of religion and interfere in the activity of the PTsU nor to cast doubt on the legitimacy of its creation."

What preceded: On 18 June, at a court hearing to select a measure of restriction in the case about the possible illegal appointment of the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, the fifth president, Petro Poroshenko, declared that a case had been opened against him for "inciting religious strife," due to the incident of receiving the tomos by the Ukrainian autocephalous church.

The GBR confirmed the opening of the case by the Security Service of Ukraine back in 2019. (tr. by PDS, posted 19 June 2020)
