Ukrainian politician claims credit for criminal case against president

DOBKIN SAYS HE INITIATED CASE AGAINST POROSHENKO FOR TOMOS AND P.Ts.U.

RISU, 19 June 2020

A former people's deputy from the Opposition Bloc, Mikhail Dobkin, boasted that he was the initiator of the new case against the fifth president, Petro Poroshenko. He stated this on his Telegram-channel, Glavkom writes.

"Serve prison time for the tomos, Petya," Dobkin noted. He also published his statement to the GBR [State Bureau of Investigation].

"Indeed, by manipulating the aspirations of the Orthodox community of Ukraine for unification, Poroshenko used church organizations and religious conflict for the achievement of victory in the elections of 2019. Such criminal actions by Porosheko aggravated religious (inter-confessional) conflict and hostility in the state. . . .

"However, statements by President Poroshenko, decisions of parliament adopted by his political forces, numerous visits by diplomatic delegations from Ukraine to Istanbul, and government officials' meetings with the patriarch of Constantinople permit one to conclude that the topic of unification of Orthodox confessions of Ukraine and the expedience of creating a local church had ceased to be the internal business of the church. Active political interference and administrative pressure on believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox churches of the Moscow and Kiev patriarchates occurred, with the aim of forcing them to accept the project of the creation of a united Orthodox church in just that format that Poroshenko and the president's political circles of the time considered correct," the statement says.

Dobkin says that the actions of Poroshenko "constituted a danger for the civil peace and political stability in Ukraine and they contain evidence of criminal actions as specified in articles 109 (actions directed to violent change or overthrow of the constitutional structure or seizure of state power), 161 (violation of the equal rights of citizens depending upon their race, national affiliation, religious convictions, disabilities, and other indicators), and 364 (abuse of authority or office) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

We recall that the GBR confirmed the existence of proceedings against Poroshenko for the tomos.

On 18 June, Poroshenko declared that a criminal case had been opened against him "on the basis of inciting inter-religious strife by means of obtaining a tomos and creating the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. . . ." (tr. by PDS, posted 19 June 2020)
