Ukrainians are mixing religion and politics

ELECTIONS 2020: UNPRECEDENTED NUMBER OF PROTESTANT CHRISTIANS ARE RUNNING FOR LOCAL COUNCILS FROM DIVERSE POLITICAL FORCES

RISU, 1 October 2020

Local elections will be held on 25 October, which will determine the direction of the development of societies in the coming years. For the first time in the history of Ukraine, in these elections an unprecedented number of Christians are running for local councils from diverse politic forces. These are hundreds of evangelical believers.

Therefore the All-Ukrainian Sobor (an association of religious and public organizations) will conduct a forum: "Ukraine on the eve of elections."

As the All-Ukrainian Sobor reports, participation in elections and subsequent work by evangelical believers in the bodies of local administration are very important since it is they, as deputies of local councils, who will be able to do much for advancing spiritual values in their cities, towns, and regions, promoting the activity of local religious communities, defending and affirming family values, expanding aid for socially vulnerable groups, working with youth, and introducing into educational institutions programs of Christian ethics and preparation for family life on the basis of Christian values.

The forum "Ukraine on the eve of elections" will involve leaders of protestant churches of Ukraine, members of the Council of Evangelical Protestant Churches of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Inter-church Council, the coordinator of the All-Ukrainian Sobor, and Christian candidates who are running.

The forum will be devoted to spiritual guidance of candidates for deputies of local councils, in order to give them direction and protect them from possible conflicts in inter-party relations, urge close cooperation with their churches, and encourage them to work for and defend Christian values.

It is planned that the forum will conclude with prayer for Christian candidates for deputies of local councils.

The All-Ukrainian Sobor is an association of religious and public organizations, as well as all concerned citizens, united around the Christian path for the development of the Ukrainian state.

As RISU has reported, the blogger priest Alexander Dediukhin said that he is running for deputy of the Poltava city council on the team "European Solidarity." (tr. by PDS, posted 1 October 2020)
