Russian church leader congratulates American president-elect on same day Putin does

PATRIARCH KIRILL WISHES BIDEN WISDOM IN OFFICE OF AMERICAN PRESIDENT

Interfax-Religiia, 15 December 2020

Patriarch of Moscow and all-Rus Kirill congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the presidential election in the U.S.A. and expressed readiness for cooperation with the new American leader.

"The modern world needs greater stability and security and the development of constructive cooperation between states aimed at the resolution of problems of extremism and terrorism, regional military conflicts, economic justice, and protection of the natural environment. I am sure that the cooperation of our countries and peoples, relying on historical experience, may become a substantial contribution in the search for effective responses to global challenges of the present" says the patriarch's congratulations, which were published on Tuesday on the RPTs website.

Patriarch Kirill noted that the Russian Orthodox Church considers inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue an important instrument for strengthening mutual respect, good neighborliness, and harmony in society, and he expressed readiness for joint work in this sphere with the authorities of the United States.

He also recalled that over a long period of time émigrés from countries of the canonical responsibility of the Moscow patriarchate have lived and worked in the U.S.A. Many of them are Orthodox believers, concern for the spiritual nourishment of whom is borne by the patriarchal parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church in the U.S.A. and by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. In speaking about this, Patriarch Kirill expressed the hope for the attention of American authorities to the religious needs of the Russian-speaking flock.

"I wish you good health and wisdom in making decisions and I wish citizens of the United States of America peace and prosperity," the head of the Russian church concluded his message. (tr. by PDS, posted 16 December 2020)
