VATICAN READY TO ACT AS MEDIATOR IN ZELENSKY-PUTIN MEETINGS
The Vatican still does not know anything about a possible meeting of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but it can act as a mediator, when needed.
This is reported in La Reppublica, citing a comment from Vatican diplomat Leonardo Sandri.
The publication writes that the Congregation for the Oriental Churches does not know about a meeting of Zelensky and Putin. But in Sandri's opinion, mediation by the Holy See is possible only as a result of the work of the Minsk group.
At the same time, the publication adds, Sandri maintains that Pope Francis can join as "he already has done in other instances in order to facilitate reconciliation."
We recall that yesterday Zelensky noted that a meeting with Putin must take place. The Ukrainian leader suggests holding it in the Vatican. He says that the Vatican is "an ideal place for dialogue about peace," (tr. by PDS, posted 1 May 2021)
