Prosecutor demands harsh sentences for elderly Jehovah's Witness couple

IN CHELIABINSK 7 YEARS OF REAL TIME REQUESTED FOR 75-YEAR-OLD JEHOVAH'S WITNESS

OVD-Info, 24 June 2021

On 23 June in the Metalurgical district court of Cheliabinsk, the prosecutor asked for seven years in prison for 75-year-old Jehovah's Witness Vladimir Suvorov. This is reported by the Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia portal.

Suvorov is charged with arranging extremist activity (part 1 of article 282.2 of the Criminal Code). The case was opened in January 2020. The order said that Suvorov "arranged meetings of fellow believers during which they prayed to Jehovah together and performed religious songs."

The case against the believer followed in the footsteps of his spouse: on 12 March 2021, the 73-year-old Valentina Suvorova was given a two-year suspended sentence with restricted liberty for a period of six months and probation of one year. The prosecutor had demanded giving Ms. Suvorova three years of real time. (tr. by PDS, posted 24 June 2021)
