Ukrainian diplomat mixes religion and politics in current crisis

ARCHBISHOP OF AMERICA CONDEMNS KREMLIN'S CHURCH IMPERIALISM

Religiina Pravda, 22 January 2022

Ukraine's ambassador to the US.A., Oksana Markarova, met with a hierarch of the ecumenical patriarchate, Archbishop of America Elpidophoros. During the meeting, Vladyka Elpidophoros expressed his support for the Ukrainian people. This is reported by the Spiritual Front of Ukraine.

"I visited the ambassador of Ukraine in Washington and expressed full support for the Ukrainian people. We condemn the political and church imperialism of the Kremlin and we appreciate the position of the government of the U.S.A.," the hierarch emphasized.

"I was pleasant to receive His Eminence Archbishop of America Elpidophoros. We feel the consistent support and we appreciate your prayers for Ukraine, since Ukraine is becoming a better country for its citizens and is being protected from Russian aggression," Markarova noted.

"I visited the Ukrainian embassy in order to express to Ambassador Oksana Markarova our support, as Christians, as Greeks, and as Americans for the people of Ukraine who are suffering from Russian imperialism, which is being manifested on all levels: military, economic, energy, and also church," Vladyka Elpidophoros noted.

He said that it is an injustice in the history and traditions of Orthodoxy that instead of supporting the sisters and brothers of Ukraine the Moscow patriarchate dutifully obeys the orders of the Kremlin and in accordance with its line is splintering Orthodoxy throughout the world and bringing dishonor to the people of God from Ukraine to Africa and even in Korea.

"We welcome the position of the government of the U.S.A. and the recent statement by a representative of the State Department condemning the ill-intentioned efforts of the Kremlin for instrumentalizing Orthodox identity," the Archbishop of America emphasized. (tr. by PDS, posted 22 January 2022)
