Kiev church primate displays Ukrainian independence in worship

METROPOLITAN ONUFRY COMMEMORATES PATRIARCH KIRILL AMONG OTHER PRIMATES IN LITURGY

Blagovest.info, 30 May 2022

In Sunday's liturgy, Metropolitan of Kiev Onufry commemorated Patriarch Kirill in the manner used for primates of the autocephalous churches, Pravoslavie i Mir reports.

This was the first liturgy by the metropolitan of Kiev after the Council, which was held on 27 May. The divine liturgy was conducted in the church of St. Agapit of the Caves in the Kiev caves lavra, and it was broadcast on its YouTube channel.

Enumerating, as is customary, the primates of the local Orthodox churches, the metropolitan named Patriarch Kirill third after the patriarchs of Antioch and Jerusalem, as heads of autocephalous churches do.

"Their Holiness Orthodox Patriarchs of Antioch Ioann, of Jerusalem Theophilos, of Moscow and all-Rus Kirill, of Georgia Ilia, of Serbia Porfiry, of Romania Daniel, of Bulgaria Neofit; Their Beatitude Archbishops and Bishops of Albania Anastasia, of Poland Savva, of Czech lands and Slovakia Rostislav, of America and Canada Tikhon. . .and may the Lord remember in His Kingdom always, now and forever and ever," Metropolitan Onufry exclaimed during the Great Entrance.

The primate of the UPTs earlier skipped the usual commemoration of the patriarch of Moscow by the formula "great sovereign and our father."

At the same time, the names of the patriarch of Constantinople and the primates of the Greek, Cypriot, and Alexandria Orthodox churches, which have recognized the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, were not commemorated.

At the Great Litany, the deacon proclaimed: "for Their Holiness Orthodox Patriarchs and Their Beatitude Metropolitans, and for the Great Sovereign and Our Father Metropolitan Onufry. . . ."

On 27 May, the Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church adopted changes in the charter which, as was announced, make the UPTs independent, and it also expressed disagreement with the position of Patriarch Kirill regarding what is happening on the territory of Ukraine.

It was later learned that not all dioceses, in particular those of Donetsk and Crimea, supported the amendments to the charter. (tr. by PDS, posted 30 May 2022)
