StetsonU’s Doug Lee Day of Service Saturday

DeLand, Fla. –Stetson University will hold the third annual Doug Lee Day of Service on Saturday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This event honors the memory of the late Doug Lee, former president and chancellor of Stetson University, and is open to Stetson and the surrounding DeLand community. Anyone interested in participating must RSVP in advance. All volunteers will meet at the Rinker Auditorium, inside the Lynn Business Center, 345 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, before departure to their designated volunteer areas around the community.

There will be several service workshops you can attend at different locations around the DeLand community, including indoor and outdoor activities. One outdoor session includes the Neighborhood Center, a DeLand resource fighting hunger and homelessness issues around the community. There will be outside labor including yard work, laying mulch and planting flowers. All participants for this workshop should dress appropriately for outside volunteer work.

Lake Woodruff volunteers will get a tour of the park and learn about the different plant and animal species. The volunteers will then help clear paths and pull invasive plant species that are harming Lake Woodruff’s habitat. Volunteers for this workshop need to wear long sleeves, long pants and closed-toed shoes for safety reasons.

The Habitat for Humanity volunteers will be helping to build a home for a family in our community. Projects will include setting trusses, decking and starting the interior framing. No experience is required. This site includes a quick drive to the project site in Deltona, so please arrive promptly. For anyone working with Habitat for the first time, work site waivers and a safety class must be completed. All the information can be found online at http://new.swvhabitat.org/. Waivers and safety information is available at the top when you click on ‘get involved’ and ‘volunteer.’ Waivers are good for a year and the safety class only has to be completed once.

The Museum of Florida Art will have volunteers helping at a children’s tent making crafts and interacting with the kids. The Border Collie Rescue volunteers will help with various projects including washing dogs, raking leaves and reorganizing their barn. The Chisholm Center is also offering volunteer work to help paint their facility. All of these workshops require comfortable clothing you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.
