Three members of the Stetson women’s tennis team were recognized on Thursday for their hard work on the courts as well as in the classroom as Atlantic Sun Conference postseason honors were handed out. Senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) were named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team while junior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the All-Conference Academic squad.

For Gunning, who was 12-7 overall and 6-3 in A-Sun singles action this spring, this is her second consecutive Second Team All-Atlantic Sun nod. In 2011, she was selected as part of a doubles pair with current sophomore Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) while in 2012 Gunning was recognized for her singles play. She was a 2009 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team honoree as well earlier in her Hatters career.

Bukajeva landed on the Second Team in her first season at Stetson after transferring from Saint Mary’s College. Playing primarily #4 singles, she has compiled a 15-4 singles record with a nearly unblemished 8-1 mark in A-Sun matches. Although Stetson’s streak of putting a player on the A-Sun First Team was snapped at seven years, the Hatters extended their run of All-Conference honors to 10 consecutive seasons overall.

Miller, a Finance major, was one of just eight players in the league named to the All-Conference Academic Team. This honor is reserved for starters or significant reserves who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher with emphasis on competitive achievement. Miller went 11-6 (5-4 A-Sun) in singles this year with a 15-4 doubles record when combining with Bukajeva.

2011-12 A-Sun women’s tennis superlative awards went to North Florida’s Aline Berkenbrock (Player of the Year) and Audra Cohen (Coach of the Year) as well as Kennesaw State’s Virginie Stein (Freshman of the Year) and ETSU’s Paula Jaime (Scholar-Athlete of the Year).

The Hatters (13-6, 6-3 A-Sun) will be the fourth seed in this weekend’s Atlantic Sun Conference Championships and will battle fifth-seeded Kennesaw State Friday at 1:30 pm in Johnson City, Tennessee. Stetson defeated KSU 4-3 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in its A-Sun opener on March 3.
