Stetson senior relief pitcher Robbie Powell had quite a week last week.

The Punta Gorda, Fla., native pitched in each of the Hatters’ five games during the week, including both games against No. 1 Florida State. After Stetson dropped the first game against the Seminoles, they won four straight to close the week, and Powell was on the mound for the final out of each game.

In Wednesday’s 6-5 victory over Florida State Powell earned his 15^th save of the season, tying the school record for saves in a season that was originally set by Mike Lyons in 1996.

Over the weekend in Johnson City, Tenn., the Hatters posted a sweep of the homestanding ETSU Buccaneers, and Powell earned a save in each game. The save in Sunday’s series finale was his 18^th of the year, tying the Atlantic Sun Conference record that was set just last year, ironically by former ETSU hurler Bo Reeder.

For the week Powell worked six innings, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while posting nine strikeouts. His efforts helped Stetson close the week with 20.2 consecutive scoreless innings against the Buccaneers.

With his 18 saves, Powell trails national co-leaders Stefan Lopez of Southeastern Louisiana and Michael Wagner of San Diego by just one.

For the season, Powell has a 1-0 record in 28 appearances with a 2.48 ERA. He has recorded saves in 10 of his last 12 appearances, and has appeared in 12 of the Hatters’ last 16 games.

While Powell’s record-breaking performance was worthy of the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honor, the Hatters had other hurlers who also gave worthy performances during the week.

Both freshman Josh Powers and senior Will Dorsey started two games during the week. Powers was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10.1 innings of work, allowing just five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Dorsey was 1-1 in his two starts with a 1.42 ERA. He worked 12.2 innings over two games, allowing just two runs on 11 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

The Hatters will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Bergman Field in Orlando to take on nationally ranked (13^th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll) UCF. Stetson will be looking to avenge a 5-4 loss to the Knights in a game that took 13 innings to decided back on May 2.

The Hatters will close the regular season this weekend with a three game series against the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast. Even though Stetson currently stands in second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings, the Hatters have not yet secured a spot in the A-Sun Tournament.

Stetson needs just one win over FGCU – or one loss by Mercer to USC Upstate – to secure a tournament berth. The Hatters are also just a game and a half behind Upstate for the regular season league title. To claim the crown, Stetson would need to sweep Gulf Coast and have Mercer win two of three from the Spartans.

The final series of the regular season will open on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. with the second game on Friday at 6:30 and the series finale on Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day for the Hatters’ 11 seniors, many of who graduated on Saturday while playing at ETSU.

The Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament will be played at Melching Field starting on Wednesday, May 23, and running through Saturday, May 26. Games are scheduled for 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. each of the first three days with games on Saturday set for a 1 p.m. start.
