Ryder concludes NCAA regional play

Greensboro, N.C. – Stetson senior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) concluded an outstanding senior season and his Hatters career Saturday, May 19, in the final round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Greensboro Regional. He shot four over par 76 at Grandover Resort’s East Course, tying for 35th place overall. The A-Sun tournament individual champion was the first Stetson men’s golfer in program history to compete in the NCAA postseason.

Ryder began his day in fine fashion with a birdie at the par four 10th, but the tough golf course would not allow him to make up the ground on the field needed to advance to the NCAA Championships. He made one more birdie before his day was done, that coming at the par five sixth hole. Ryder finished at nine over par for the 54-hole event.

Only one individual golfer from a non-advancing team qualified for the NCAA Championships; Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume defeated fellow co-medalist Matt Schovee of SMU in a one-hole playoff after both finished -3 for the week. Advancing teams were Liberty (+4), Florida (+7), Auburn (+10), Lamar (+13) and Tulsa (+14).

Ryder was Stetson’s first A-Sun tournament medalist since Tom Creevy in 1991 and a First Team All-Atlantic Sun honoree as a senior; he won four events in total this season and was a two-time Second Team All-Atlantic Sun selection as a sophomore and as a junior.
