Single-gender classes, video game violence top news

The Florida Legislature will be considering a proposal this year on single-gender classrooms, an issue that Stetson has been researching for more than 10 years. Stetson also was mentioned frequently in the news for research on the effects of video game violence.   • Chris Ferguson, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of psychology, wrote an op-ed for the Hartford Courant Jan. 3 regarding reports on Adam Lanza’s (Sandy Hook school shooter) violent video game play. Ferguson also was quoted in a WDRB.com article on gun violence in movies stating that there is little evidence linking media violence to violence in real life.   • Kathy Piechura-Couture, professor of education, was quoted in a WJCT article Jan. 2, on single-gender classrooms. In Florida, two lawmakers filed a controversial bill to establish a pilot program for single-gender classrooms in some public elementary schools.
  • Jamil Khader, Ph.D., professor of English and completing a Fulbright Fellowship at Bir Zeit University in Palestine, wrote an op-ed for Al Jazeera on Dec. 28, regarding whether Israeli audiences see parallels between the movie “The Hunger Games,” and life in Palestine. The article was picked up by Yahoo! News (UK, Ireland, Maktoob), and New Age Bandladesh.
  • The Jan. 7 Orlando Sentinel included an editorial on the Affordable Care Act by Richard H. Wood, Jr., professor emeritus of economics.
  • Law Professor Luz Nagle is quoted in the Dec. 28 ABA Journal article, “Organized crime leaders and terrorists cross paths in cyberspace.” Professor Luz Nagle wrote a guest blog post for the Dec. 27 FCPAméricas Blog on “How Lawyers Can Contribute to New Anti-Corruption Laws.”
