Concert Choir performs Friday after NYC performance

Concert Choir QuadUpon their return from their 2014 Spring Tour through five states, culminating at the Lincoln Center in New York City, members of the Stetson University Concert Choir will perform on the DeLand campus on Friday, March 14, 7:30 p.m., in Lee Chapel, inside Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd. 

Beginning Saturday, March 1, the first day of the university’s spring break, Stetson’s Concert Choir, Timothy Peter, Ph.D., conductor, performed in Hickory, N.C., Duke Chapel in Durham, N.C., in Alexandria, Va., and Odenton, Md. On Thursday, March 6, they performed at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City.

In addition to other sacred choral music and traditional folk songs, at Friday’s concert the Concert Choir will be performing If Ye Love Me by Thomas Tallis; Va, Pensiero from Nabucco by Guiseppe Verdi; Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge by Ralph Vaughan Williams; Psalm 90 by Charles Ives; and the 2014 premiere of Simple Songs by Stetson Professor of Music Janis Kindred.

Timothy Peter joined Stetson University in the fall of 2012 as director of choral activities. He conducts the Stetson Concert Choir, which is the university’s touring SATB ensemble comprised of select upper-class singers. Previous to his position at Stetson he was professor of music at Luther College and served as the head of the music department. He has been a high school choral director and church musician in Minnesota, Iowa, and Arizona. A native of Minnesota, Peter has conducted choirs that have been selected to perform at the 2011 National ACDA Conference in Chicago and four Divisional NC-ACDA conventions held in Minneapolis, Minn.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Madison, Wis.; and the Florida State ACDA convention in 2013. He has conducted in Germany, Namibia, Oman, South Africa, and South Korea.

University Organist Boyd Jones, the John E. and Aleise Price Professor of Organ, will perform with the Concert Choir. Jones performs extensively throughout the United States on both organ and harpsichord, in addition to his duties as university organist. Author of articles for numerous publications, Jones was the American correspondent for the English journal Choir and Organ, providing articles on American organ builders in each issue for three years. He has also served as consultant for several significant organ projects.

Adjunct music faculty member Tammy Miller will also perform with the Concert Choir Friday evening. Miller accompanies students, faculty and choirs. Her recent performances include accompanying the Women’s Chorale under the direction of Andrew Larson at the Southern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, Schumann’s Spaniches Liederspiel Op. 74, as part of Stetson’s Schumann Festival, and accompanying the 2011 Florida All-State Women’s Choir.

Stetson University has a rich heritage of choral singing beginning more than 100 years ago. The Concert Choir is a highly selective 52-voice ensemble comprised of exclusively undergraduate music majors and singers who are pursuing an array of degrees from across Stetson’s beautiful campus. The choir performs repertoire in a variety of sacred and secular genres in numerous languages and cultural domains. Later this spring the choir will collaborate with the Stetson Symphony Orchestra, the Stetson Chorale and Stetson Men in a performance of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms on Thursday, April 24, at First Baptist Church DeLand.
