The Benefits of Summer Study at Stetson

Stetson Professor Mitchell Reddish likes to tell students that there are many advantages to taking courses over the summer.

Students can catch up on classes and make sure they graduate on time. They can accelerate their academic studies. They can take classes online from home, or enjoy the more relaxed feel on campus during Summer Study @ Stetson.

Students often are surprised to learn they can save money, too, because there’s a “significant difference” in tuition for summer courses compared to the fall and spring terms, he added.

“I see a lot of ways in which summer provides opportunities that students would not normally have,” said Reddish, Ph.D., the Chair of Religious Studies who also coordinates Stetson’s summer academic for-credit sessions.

Financial assistance may be available, so students should contact Student Financial Planning for more information. And they can find housing through Residential Living & Learning.

Students will see a wide variety of classes available, from Astronomy and Africana Studies to Finance. Last year, Stetson saw a big jump in summer offerings and is making those courses available again this summer.

Registration is underway and will continue until a few weeks before summer classes begin May 20. If students know they want to take a particular course, they should register now because classes with low enrollment could be dropped from the course list, Reddish added.

There are three sessions available: A seven-week session from May 20-July 11; a four-week session from May 20 to June 18; and another four-week session from June 20-July 19.

For Summer 2019, students will find that online courses, which previously were offered only during the seven-week summer session, now may be available during a four-week session.

“I would point out that students should check the class schedule list to see what’s available,” he said. “There’s a large selection of courses for students to take and some new courses are being offered this summer.”
