Stetson President Christopher F. Roellke, PhD, offered encouragement at the 137th annual Commencement ceremonies at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium in DeLand on May 6.

“We are here to celebrate you and celebrate your accomplishments,” said Roellke.

Stetson awarded a total of 859 bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the three outdoor Spring 2023 Commencement ceremonies held on both May 5 and May 6.

In a keynote address to undergraduates, Janie Grace Wang ’23, magna cum laude, Bachelor of Sciences in health sciences and psychology minor, challenged the graduates on the importance of knowing their identity. Wang highlighted identity as:

  • The way you treat the people you are around and who you are when they are not
  • Your perseverance and drive to accomplish tasks set before you
  • What you are called to do with your life
  • Your values, both learned and intrinsic, and what brings you joy
  • Knowing who you are and being proud of who you are

“Surround yourself with people who are proud of you,” advised Wang. “Hold fast to what you’ve learned here at Stetson, as the life lessons taught here will help propel you to greatness.”

An honorary doctorate was awarded to former DeLand Mayor Robert F. Apgar.

A resident of DeLand since 1959, son of former Stetson University professor of Military Science, and brother Bill Apgar, ’73, Robert Apgar served as the longest mayor in Volusia County’s history.

Apgar cultivated a strong relationship between Stetson and the City of DeLand by leading the construction and later renovation of Melching Field at Conrad Park, along with satisfying the required improvements of the city-owned Spec Martin Stadium for Stetson Football.

Once the graduates received their degrees, they were welcomed into the family of Stetson alumni.

“It is truly my honor to welcome you as alumni,” said Margo Thomas, executive director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving. “Our greatest legacy is you.

“Being Stetson alumni is who you are and who you will always be. You have made your mark here. You have made us better as you carry Stetson wherever you go in the world.”

The ceremony concluded with a charge from Roellke in his characteristic style: “Go make your families proud. Go Hatters!”
