Hatter and Pep Bands Head into 2024-2025 Academic Year under New Director

The Hatter and Pep bands strive to provide their best performance every game for spectators and fellow Hatters.

The Hatter and Pep bands will inject fresh excitement and musical flair into Stetson’s football and basketball games this year under the high-energy leadership of Chandler Wilson, PhD, the School of Music’s new Director of bands.

The Miami native brings a wealth of experience in leading athletic bands, teaching music education, and conducting musicians from his previous roles at Florida State and Eastern Michigan universities.

Wilson said he looks forward to “being able to build upon a lot of the traditions that are already here and creating and developing new memories and experiences for the students and the School of Music itself.”

As for his teaching style, “as a whole, [it’s] naturally very high-octane, so my energy level is up to 10 all the time,” he laughed.

The new director’s energy will help fuel Stetson’s athletic bands, which entertain fans, support teams and provide the musical backdrop for games. The Hatter Band plays at football games, while the Pep Band performs at home games for women’s and men’s basketball teams.

“We’re going to do our part as far as our energy and song selection that we have and making sure we’re being musical ambassadors, not just for the university but also for the team at the games,” Wilson said.

“The band program at Stetson University has a rich history rooted in a tradition of excellence that has made it one of the finest in the country,” said School of Music Dean Washington Garcia, DMA. “Emphasizing musicianship, leadership and excellence, the program has gained recognition for its rigorous performance standards. Our athletic bands play a vital role in elevating the spirit of our athletic events and strengthening the cultural fabric of the Stetson community and the broader DeLand area.”

As Wilson takes the baton, Garcia expressed confidence in the new director’s ability to grow and develop the band program.

“Dr. Wilson is inheriting this remarkable program and is poised to elevate it even further,” he said. “With his extensive experience, Dr. Wilson will bring fresh perspectives to Stetson.”

The Hatter Band plays at football games, while the Pep Band performs at home games for women’s and men’s basketball teams.

As a director and associate professor, Wilson said preparation will be key so he can make the most of his time with his musicians, whether they’re music majors or only athletic band participants.

“He will have the opportunity to mentor top-quality students, fostering their growth while pushing the program to reach new heights of excellence,” Garcia said. “Dr. Wilson’s leadership, combined with his creative expertise and deep commitment to music education, promises an exciting future for Stetson’s band program.”

For Wilson, performing at games and in concert—sometimes directing his own compositions—is a way to give back.

“It’s about doing what we need not just to get ourselves off the seats and getting the music off the page, but making sure we’re putting on the best performance for the people in the audience,” Wilson said.

“We’re doing a service, and a part of that is making sure that the people who are coming to watch us — whether it’s fans or people in Lee Chapel — are getting a great experience and want to come back,” he said.
