The Roland George Investments Program (RGIP) is a student-managed investment initiative that historically has provided students with hands-on learning experiences in the world of finance.

This year, RGIP is organizing a transformative experiential learning trip to New York City for 32 students from both the junior and senior cohorts. The trip, which will take place during the week of Oct. 7, aims to immerse students in the dynamic environment of the world’s financial capital, providing them with valuable opportunities to connect with industry professionals and gain real-world insights that extend beyond the classroom.

Alumni Networking

One of the highlights of the trip is the chance for students to network with RGIP alumni who have successfully built careers in the finance industry. Alumni currently working at some of the top investment firms will share their insights, career advice and industry knowledge.

This type of interaction is crucial for students. It provides them with direct access to professionals who were once in their shoes, demonstrating the value of the RGIP experience and offering practical guidance on how to navigate the finance world after graduation. Additionally, students will participate in an alumni networking reception, further expanding their professional connections and allowing them to engage in meaningful discussions with alumni and recruiters.

Experiential Learning

The itinerary also includes visits to some of New York City’s most iconic financial institutions, such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve, Lazard and BlackRock. Touring these institutions gives students a firsthand look at the inner workings of the financial markets.

Observing market players in action, and understanding the role of regulatory bodies in maintaining market stability, provides a much richer understanding of finance than what can be offered by textbooks alone. It is one thing to study the mechanics of stock exchanges and monetary policy in theory, but witnessing them in action reinforces the complexity and scale of the global financial system. Students also will receive technical instruction at Bloomberg’s headquarters.

A key aspect of the trip is meeting with managing directors and partners at top-tier investment firms. These individuals often draw on decades of experience to offer students invaluable insights into the industry. By hearing directly from those who have weathered various market cycles and managed large portfolios, students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within investment management. These conversations also help students visualize their potential career paths and refine their goals.
