Moving Into the National Arena

Following the Presidential election, two College of Law alumni were chosen for new roles: Pam Bondi JD ’90 and Ashley Moody LLM ’10.
President Donald Trump selected Bondi, a former Florida attorney general, as U.S. Attorney General. With her confirmation on Feb. 4, Bondi assumes the nation’s top law enforcement role. Bondi’s selection followed decades of service within the legal profession. In 2019, the Stetson Lawyers Alumni Association officially recognized her for “extra efforts to prevail for the benefit of Florida’s citizens.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Moody, then-Florida attorney general, to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Sen. Marco Rubio, who was chosen to serve as U.S. Secretary of State. Moody was an adjunct professor at the College of Law and helped Stetson’s Center for Elder Justice train attorneys on how to help clients avoid fraud.
More Alumni
In addition, three other Stetson alumni have close ties to the Trump administration: Dr. Janette Nesheiwat; her sister, Julia Nesheiwat; and Louis DeJoy.
Selected by Trump, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat is the nominee for Surgeon General of the United States. She attended Stetson before graduating from the University of South Florida and, later, completed her medical training at University of Arkansas Medical Sciences. Her career is highlighted by a commitment to public service, including disaster-relief efforts in Haiti, Ukraine and Africa.
Julia Nesheiwat ’97, a former military intelligence officer, has held senior national security and economic policy positions with presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Trump (including as Trump’s 10th Homeland Security Advisor, 2020-2021). She was in the spotlight recently when Trump chose Mike Waltz, her husband, as National Security Advisor.
DeJoy ’79 is the 75th Postmaster General of the United States, beginning his term in June 2020. Under his guidance, while in the midst of one of the largest organizational transformations in the United States, the Postal Service received a 2024 Presidential Federal Sustainability Award for “Electrifying the Largest Federal Fleet.”
