Second Stage Theatre At Stetson Presents: Aristophanes’ Lysistrata

Second Stage Theatre at Stetson University continues its 119th season with Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, which will run from Feb. 13-16.
Frustrated by the lengthy duration of the Peloponnesian War, the women of Athens empower the sacred life force of their sexuality to seize the Athenian Acropolis and the city’s treasury by withholding any sexual conduct from their nation’s men until a resolution is met. Staged as a site-specific theatrical experience in the Brown Hall Outdoor Classroom, the modern stone and glass facades coupled with practical garden spaces will provide a contemporary and cultivating backdrop for this Ancient Greek comedy.

According to director Julia Schmitt, PhD, professor of Theatre Arts and chair of the Creative Arts Department, the venue in which the play will take place, an open-aired garden, will provide a space to explore this ancient “Battle of the Sexes.”
“The plot of Lysistrata, an ancient Greek can be summarized by a simple phrase: women versus men,” she said. “While the phrasing may be simple, the themes this play explores are anything but.”
The cast of Lysistrata includes:

Reagan Swayze as Lysistrata, Samantha Mariji Pedro as Ismenia, Moira Hughes as Myrrhine, Reed Barkowitz as Lampito, Rachel Yadanza as Colonice, Paco Torres as Cinesias, Ella Oleck as Leader of the Women’s Chorus, Miles Reynolds as Leader of the Men’s Chorus, Sheridan Macon as Spartan Ambassador, Raelon Chisolm as The Magistrate, Courtney Wood as Men’s Chorus, Noel Vicente as Men’s Chorus, Elizabeth Stebleton as Women’s Chorus and Molly Monahan as Women’s Chorus.
Catch the show Thursday, Feb. 13; Friday, Feb. 14; and, Saturday, Feb.15 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m.
