Russian president attends rural church on Christmas Eve

VLADIMIR PUTIN ARRIVED FOR CHRISTMAS SERVICE AT PROTECTION CHURCH IN VILLAGE OF OTRADNOE IN VORONEZH PROVINCE

Portal-credo.ru, 7 January 2015

Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in a Christmas worship service in the night of 6-7 January in a village church in honor of the Protection (Pokrov) of the Most Holy Mother of God, located in the village of Otradnoe in Voronezh province. This year the parishioners of this church include children from the orphanage in the church along with local residents, RIA Novosti reports.

The church in the village of Otradnoe is included in the list of objects of the cultural heritage and accommodates around 450 parishioners. Construction of the church lasted eight years from 1893. In 1930 the church was closed and the premises for many years were used for grain storage. Restoration of the church began in 1991.

As a rule, Putin greets Christmas outside the limits of the capital. In the past two years he celebrated Christmas in Sochi. The year before, Putin arrived for the holiday service in the Holy Transfiguration church of St. Petersburg, where he had been baptized.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his spouse attended the church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, where the worship service was conducted by Patriarch Kirill. (tr. by PDS, posted 7 January 2015)
