RISU, 9 January 2015

A church burned down on Christmas in the village of Verkhnee in Lvov province, the news agency Navigator reports. According to a report in the press center of the Chief Directorate of the Ukrainian State Service for Emergencies in Lvov province, at 13.21 on 7 January a report came in to rescue workers that a fire had started in the church of the Presentation of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Temple of the UPTs of the Kiev patriarchate in the village of Verkhnee in Turki district.

The church building was constructed in 1913 out of wood and covered with iron, measuring 30 by 15 meters and 23 meters in height.

While waiting for the rescue personnel, parishioners tried independently to extinguish the fire, but the flames quickly spread through the wooden construction of the church building and spread to the bell tower.

At 14.44 the fire was completely extinguished. The bell tower could be saved, although its wooden wall was damaged in an area of 35 square meters. But the church itself burned to the ground. (tr. by PDS, posted 9 January 2015)
