Vandals attack Moscow mosque

MEMORIAL MOSQUE ON POKLONNAYA HILL IN MOSCOW DESECRATED

Kavpolit, 12 January 2015

Vandals desecrated the Memorial Mosque on Poklonnaya ["Memorial"] Hill in Moscow. This was reported by the vice-chairman of the All-Russian International Union of Youth, Azmat Mintsaev, on his Facebook page.

"Here is what was drawn in Moscow on the walls of the Memorial Mosque on Poklonnaya Hill!" Mintsaev wrote, and he posted photographs that, he said, were sent to him by parishioners who this morning, 12 January, arrived at the mosque for morning prayer. (tr. by PDS, posted 12 January 2015)

[. . .] On the walls of the mosque, obscene graffiti and drawings were made with black paint along with an image of an Orthodox cross.

"All news media are silent and refuse to give news or there is no reaction. Even LifeNews has not published news about this," Mintsaev says in his commentary.

One blogger gave a skeptical view of the possibility of catching the vandals. "There is a bunch of videocameras for external observation [near the mosque] and it would not take special effort to find them. But what's the point? They will turn out to be teenagers 'of unprosecutable age' from organizations that are protected by 'windbag' deputies," Yusup Yusupoff wrote. (tr. by PDS, posted 12 January 2015)

RUSSIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY URGES SWIFT DISCOVERY OF PERPETRATORS OF DESECRATION OF MOSQUE IN MOSCOW

Interfax-Religiia, 12 January 2015

Alexander Boroda, the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEOR), condemned the vandals who desecrated the Memorial Mosque on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow last night.

"Russia is a multinational state and our main tasks is to preserve in society an atmosphere of mutual respect among representatives of all peoples living on the territory of our country. Desecration of a mosque, a sacred place for Muslims, is a disgusting manifestation of xenophobia," A. Boroda declared, who was quoted Monday by the press service of FEOR.

He noted that vandals try to offend the feelings of believers and sow inter-religious hostility, and law enforcement agencies must display "heightened attention to such acts of vandalism and the perpetrators must be found as quickly as possible and condemned."

"Against the background of events occurring in the world and of inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflicts in Russia, it is absolutely necessary that representatives of the most diverse peoples and religions remain an example of friendly relations with one another" A. Boroda emphasized.

He called Russian society not to give in to provocations intended to inflame religious intolerance and inter-ethnic strife. (tr. by PDS, posted 12 January 2015)
