Ecumenical Christian leaders may tilt toward Ukraine by visit

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES DELEGATION ARRIVES IN UKRAINE FROM GENEVA

A representative delegation of the World Council of Churches (WCC), that comprises 348 Christian confessions in more than 100 countries representing about 400 million Christians of the world, is visiting Ukraine on 18 and 19 March.

 

The delegation is led by the secretary general of WCC, Dr. Olaf Fykse Tveit. The leadership of WCC also includes the vice-moderator of the Central Committee of WCC, Orthodox Metropolitan of Sasima Gennady (Constantinople patriarchate), and the president of WCC for Europe, retired Lutheran archbishop Dr. Anders Wejryd  (Church of Switzerland). In addition the delegation also comprises representatives of various Christian confessions from Australia, Great Britain, Holland, Germany, Romania, and USA.

 

According to a report on the official website of the synodal department of UPTs, the receiving side and organizer of the visit is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is a member of the World Council of Churches in Ukraine. It is planned that during the visit the guests will meet with the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, representatives of religious communities of Ukraine, and high-level state officials.

 

The goal of the visit by the WCC delegation is acquaintance with the situation in Ukraine in order to understand what may be done by the international Christian community for cooperating in the establishment of peace in our country, including a way to support Ukrainian confessions in activity in this sphere.
