Crimean religious organizations slow to register under Russian law

RIA Novosti, 1 April 2015

The period for reregistration of religious organizations of Crimea has been extended to 1 January 2016, the vice-premier of the Crimean government, Ruslan Balbek, told RA Novosti.

Earlier, the deadline for completing reregistration in accordance with legislation of the Russian federation was established as 1 March 2015.

"In response to appeals by religious organizations of Crimea, the deadline for reregistration has been extended to 1 January 2016. They are again being given time for submitting their founding documents in accordance with the legislation of the Russian federation," the vice-premier said.

Balbek said that relevant changes have been introduced into the federal law "On freedom of conscience and religious associations."

Balbek emphasized that at present the majority of religious organizations have not managed to go through reregistration, and therefore the changes introduced into federal legislation will permit an easing of the process of transfer into the Russian legal field. "On the part of the government, all conditions have been created so that religious organizations will feel protected," the vice-premier stressed.

In Ukrainian Crimea, 2083 religious organizations were functioning, of which 1409 were registered in accordance with Ukrainian legislation and 674 were not legal entities.

"At present, only 33 organizations in all have gone through reregistration," the head of the Department for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Culture of the republic of Crimea, Alexander Selevko, told RIA Novosti. (tr. by PDS, posted 2 April 2015)
