LUHANSK GOVERNOR: FIGHTERS FOR RUSSIAN WORLD SHELLED ORTHODOX CHURCH ON TRINITY SUNDAY

Religiia v Ukraine, 2 June 2015

Pro-Russian militants fired upon the church of St. Nicholas in the residential area of Zolotoe (Luhansk province), Religiia v Ukraine reports with a reference to Ligu.net and the press service of the head of the Luhansk military civic administration, Gennady Moskal.

"At around eight in the evening, militants from Pervomaisk shelled the village of Zolotoe which is on the front line in Luhansk province. The Orthodox church of St. Nicholas also came under fire; it is located on the outskirts of Zolotoe at the entrance to Katerinovka. The shell flew and exploded in the yard of the church and shrapnel broke out windows in the residence of the priest and the church itself. During the shelling, people were in the house and it is a miracle that none of them was wounded or killed," the report notes.

Gennady Moskal said that at the site of the explosion fragments of the shell were found which had been shot from an anti-tank rocket system Cornet.

"Its calibre was 152 millimeters (the use of such a calibre is forbidden by the Minsk agreements), and the shell is designed for stopping armoured vehicles. Yesterday, several hours before one of the major Christian feasts, 'fighters for the Russian World' used this weapon against an Orthodox church," the statement of the press service of the Luhansk provincial administration says.
